Hi all,

Really want to get a G and this one has been on auto trader for at least a year now. Cost is 15K - I know that G's are expensive but is that  reasonable asking price? It ticks the boxes (got to be an auto, preferably SWB diesel) but would appreciate advice from those in the know, i.e. should I wait for a more reasonably priced vehicle? Cheers!

There aren't any engine bay photos so assume it is a naturally aspirated diesel, whilst the alloys are nice I wouldn't pay for the "facelifted" front end which like any human facelift never looks quite right. Any car that has stood for a 12 month needs to be approached with caution, brakes can seize, pipes corrode, take a person with knowledge and haggle hard. The dealer doesn't like having capital thats unproductive so might be ameanable to a slightly cheeky offer of £10k

I agree with Paul, it's been standing a long while. What's more, knowing where this is coming from, I would most definately get an expert to come along with you to look it over. Even better would be to arrange for it to be looked over in an expert's workshop, I have good reason for expressing this degree of caution.

Thanks for the advice guys. I know what you mean about the facelift look. TBH I don't like the bling look that much, but from the pics it looks like a well looked after car (at least the chassis does!)

Ian, you sound as if you've come across this car before - is there anything in particular about its history that you think i should be aware of? Could you PM me if you don't want to reply to the thread?

Thanks

Re: Honest advice on cost

Hi G_funk,

Really good question. Befre I ramble on, what do you want to do with your G when you get it? Off road, soft road or just road?

I am going to assume that Ian was meaning the former owners of GWagen? (max & co?) If so a number of people have been bitten once from the previous owners. I have brought My G from there and have nothing but praise for the new owners in my case.

The G your looking for was/is owned by an old member and he has spent a lot of time getting it back up to speck, OK the new interior and face lift is not to all peoples taste, but at least its done with some sympathy and looks  quite nice in the 'flesh'.

Now the Price - not sure what paper work is going to be supplied with the vehicle, but chatting to the former owner, he has been quite focused on getting it back up to spec, its just circumstances that is forcing sale. BTW last time I spoke with James at G Wagen, the garage is taking a commission on the price offered on behalf of the member. James also knows G's and would make sure its moved, looked at and checked, however you would be advised to take into account some of the other advice members have posted.

I would suggest that you take it for a spin and see for yourself, if it helps and you can give me some notification, I am happy to meet you there and take you through some areas to look at, though my forte is in Petrol 500's and not smelly, dirty, yucky diesels....cheeky

Can't edit the above - so will add this on.

While I do sing the praises of G Wagen at Caversham, it has come to my attention that not everyone has been dealt with in the same manner and some people have and are experiencing some 'challenges'. But I can say the G in question does look rather good subject to test drive, accompanying paper work etc etc., and my offer still stands to meet up and walk you round and share my knowledge with you.

A 5K on top of your budget would get you a nice 500 ... :-)

Re: Honest advice on cost

I can't believe yours hasn't been snapped up already. Seems like a real good buy. That said I think people can be very suspicious about low prices. I offered my SL60 at £16K, I have been highly ambivilent about selling it, so I thought if I offered it on the MB board cheap, it would be snapped up before I could change my mind again. After a lot of fannying around it didn't sell so now I'll be marketing in properly in the Spring at whatever the market price seems to be, probably between 22K and 26K.

I do believe people were suspicious, they thought that there must be something wrong with it for me to be offering it so low. I think people don't understand that there are some folks who suffer from a serious and deeply pathological hatred of selling cars !!

Commiserations; and good luck with the sale.
