Hi G-urus.. first post here, been lurking on this forum quite a long time.. love it because it is so easy to navigate, electrical, body, mods, diesel etc etc..

Got my self a rusty lwb -86 300GD with a 617.952 STT Turbo & intercooler. lots of work on the body regarding rust, but the frame is amazingly mint condiditon.. will post before and after pics..

1. I have an webasto DW50 lying around, wondered where the OEM location of the aux heater is? not so much space under the hood on these cars.. where to hook in to fuel and water?

Also, my right front fender flare was in two pieces, so figured i ordered a set of 10cm flares from CLC in Poland. amazingly cheap, 138GBP for a set of 4 inc S&H to Norway. I have ordered from them before and been very satisfied, http://www.carlovincriminals.eu

2. So with regard of the flares, what kind of tires can i run without them sticking to far out with the oem 15" ET37 alloy wheel? I do have some 305/70-16 tires lying around, but would like some tall skinny ones and then i have a problem sourcing some 16" wheels/rims, no problem making some body modifications to allow for bigger wheels, but no lift for now.

thanks for any advice.. Best regards from Norway, Rune B.

16" alloys and steel wheels are quite narrow only 6j or perhaps 6.5j wide so they won't fill your wheel arches with the spats fitted, these fitment wheels were most commonly on vehicles with no arches.. So I would stick with the 15" 7j alloys and fit 31.5 x 10.50 x 15 tyres these should be ok

Re: Hi! Introduction + Webasto location and tires..

If your fender flare is original, it may be fibreglass, which is easily repairable.   If it's rubber, Evostik works wonders.

I have no idea where the webasto heater fits, but when I once walked past a German 463 which had one fitted, and which came on as I walked past, the sound seemed to come from underneath the car.

Look at the American sizes for the 15" wheels.   31x10.50x15 will fit, as will 30x9.50x15.   Your standard tyre on a 15" wheel had an outer diameter of 29", so both will give you a little extra height.

Re: Hi! Introduction + Webasto location and tires..

thans for the replies. the webasto exhaust is located under the car, pointing downwards, assume you heard that.. hope someone with a oem aux heater will chime in..

whats the biggest tire i could fit without a lift? assumed 33x12.5 on stock alloys and minor bodywork would go..? but dont really want a 12.5" wide tire for this car. i know bfg makes 33x10.5-15" MT tires, but i do not like the km2`s..

Re: Hi! Introduction + Webasto location and tires..

It really depends on what you mean by big.   I've fitted 7.50x16 tyres which have an overall diameter of 33".   They were fine, and only caught slightly when reversing on full lock.   A quick tweek back of the steering wheel stopped the rubbing.   Your original 15" tyres were 255 mm wide, so a 9.50 is slightly narrower, and a 10.50 slightly wider.   Your original tryes were a nominal 29" diameter, which gives you some idea of how much taller the vehicle will sit.   I have run a G on 255/55x18 tyres and 285/60x18 tyres.   Neither rubbed anywhere.   I found the first very hard, and with the latter the car was faster in third than top.   It tramlined with both sizes fitted.   My preference is 235/70X16 tyres on a 7" rim.

Going for the American sizes does not limit you to Goodrich tyres, as Pirelli,Dunlop and most of the others do something in these sizes now.

Re: Hi! Introduction + Webasto location and tires..

by a pure coincidence i finally found some 16" wheels I could use. since I got the 4cm wider fender flares I had problems finding wheels that fitted without spacers.

got a hold of these wheels from a private person in Denmark, he had got them custom made in italy, they are ready for beadlock, but I had beadlocks before on a landcruiser and dont want to go that way again.. more no`s than pros when you are not seriously rockcrawling or below 3psi tire pressure..

they are 7x16" ET 10, and i will order Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac 285/75-16"

I have no idea who made these wheels, but will update this thread when I get the wheels home.. must be some markings on them..

i think they are SWEET!!!

happy new year from Norway!...

Hi,

You can see the OEM mounting location (for LHD versions) in the following photos, to the right of the engine, with the exhaust normally lower down in the engine bay, pointing backwards:

Re: Hi! Introduction + Webasto location and tires..

thanks for the photos M2dxb.. i remember that location on my 463 G400, but wondered if anybody had photos of the location on a 460. but either way it seems i have to improvise and just find some empty space..

the wheels are made by RVS in Italy, they make wheels for the red bull formula 1cars as well..:D cant wait to get them home...

Indeed they are a nice looking wheel; Also made to fit Land Rovers, called the Terrafitma TF100

Obviously as they;re shown on a G above, they're made for differing PCD's.

Hi Rube B,

If you could do an overhead photo of your engine compartment, suggestions could be given to help you.

Very few, if at all W460's have been fitted with additional heaters. There are more military versions that have these heaters fitted mainly in the Wolf models. There is one Wolf model, if not sold with a GWOA member which apparently has an additional heater fitted to it. However, this member is abroad for a  fortnight so I cannot get in touch with him currently until his return.

W461 are more likely to have these heaters fitted.

This information may be bought form Mercedes Benz's Service and Parts portal on the internet and after registering with them, it will cost some €4.00 per hours' session on the portal.

I am trying to get the information from Webasto UK but had no joy yet, I being send round in circles but have not given up. Speaking to a local dealer in my area, they would fit as their judgment allowed.

I have collected so far, some operating instructions of your heater and some general fitting instructions but these are a guideline not the actual Mercedes Benz layout of fitting. I will post these up for you after speaking to our holidaying GWOA member returns.

Cox.Adrian, if you really have a use for beadlocks, then the answer is simple.. get them.. if not, dont...

pros: obviously offroading, extreme rockcrawling and snowdriving with very low pressure. you protect the edge of the wheel when hitting a rock or some other obstacles, cheaper to buy a new ring than a new wheel, and of course they looks awesome :)

Cons; expensive, the wheels are quite costly, bead ring alone costs about 100£ for my wheels, and thats a fair price. complicates balancing the wheel, 1/10mm out of alignment when mounting the tire on the bead will be noticable on a balancer.

on one of my previous builds (see pic), i had a 38" tire with quite a wide bead(AT405), so the beadring didnt get aligned right, had to machine a spacer to get the tire to fit right. but with "traditional small" tires with normal beads this would not be a problem.

but.... despite all this, i wouldnt surprise myself if i ordered a set of rings, and then drink alot of beers and stare angry at them for a while... before mounting them.. it does look cool. :D

Re: Hi! Introduction + Webasto location and tires..

on my original unmolested ex Danish Army 6i7/460 1985 the factory fit Webasto heater unit is under the spout of the air cleaner

Exhaust downward as stated

I will post or pass to rakesh a full set of pics shortly

My own opinion on wheels ,as shared by many is just 51/2j x 16 std 460 steel [ 6j x 16 461 if you can get them]  fitted with 235.85 x 16  - this is a widely availble { LR Disco } physically large tyre which fills the arch area well ,high sidewall for comfort, large rolling radius to improve gearing

Re: Hi! Introduction + aux heater location and wheels

Hi. I have a factory fitted webasto on my 463: as you look at the car, it is in the front left hand corner. As tony mentioned, just below your air intake spout. The exhaust exits behind the cats on the firewall of the car: why they put the exhaust so far back, I don't know - would think it would have something to do with not chocking the occupants whilst driving with the heater on (i.e. possible backdraft into the cabin-air inlets). Hope that helps/Ph

Re: Hi! Introduction + aux heater location and wheels

thanks all, will check if i can fit it there. probably the only place that would fit actually..

cant get to that spot right now, painting the car. modyfing the flares now..

if you look closely you`ll notice that i removed all the holes for the bottom rubber list. wanted a cleaner look and i will make som rock sliders that will hug the sills..

had to modify the flares some..
