Hi all, just registerd here.

I live in SA (South Africa) and have 3 G's

'91 300GD SWB W463

'92 300GD LWB W463

'96 290GD LWB W461

Currently looking into doing a 603 - 606 mod on the 300GD LWB but still early stages. ie. just sourced a motor.

Hope to hear from members here of possible pitfalls.

I currently have only a 606 conversion SWB after selling all the rest.

 

Fitting a 500 is a much better option, I just can't force myself to do it. Give my number to your mechanic, or bring the car down to George, I will arrange for it to be done here.

Hi Christo,

I will be doing the conversion myself, have already done two previously. (290 ->290Turbo ala SsangYong and 230GE -> 280SEmotor with auto transmission)

I just need to figure out what Air cleaner to use and how to route the piping for that. If you have ideas that would be great and if you have photos that would be even better.

The route I took for the aircleaner is a custom box with Isuzu 280 air filter, connected throught the window washer hole in the fender. I fitted an ORC snorkel and had my window washer storage tank reduced by a bumper repair shop.

 

Positives are that it looks great, and filters are readily available.

Negatives are that you have less window washer fluid, and the snorkel is quite noisy when driving with open windows. 

 

BTW I have tried a few aircleaner options and trust me, the 606, especially the turbo, has a very noisy intake. It sounds like a racing engine, but a very loud racing engine.
