Hello from Canada to all the members

As a newbie to this forum or any other I’d like to give you a bit of background about me and my G.  Here in Canada there’s not a big community (from what I can tell) of G owners on the forums.  But as I said, being a newbie and with not a lot of time on my hand to spend online I may be wrong, It’d be nice to find out I’m wrong in this case!  I’ve worked in the automotive industry all my life and to be honest the last thing I wanted to do after coming home was to look at another car.  Lately due to a career change I miss working with my hands, typing on a keyboard doesn’t do it for me.

So some years back I fell in love with the G Wagen, although I must admit the sight of the Pope Mobile makes me ill and I’m a Roman Catholic but nonetheless I always had it in the back of my mind to pick one up.  As it turns out I had worked out a trade with a local dealer, my ‘02 530i in mint condition for a 91 500SL imported from Japan as a second choice for a project.  While locating a hard top for the SL came across a dealer who had one.  Upon arrival to pick it with my 2 week old SL, I spot in the show room a silver G that wasn’t even running.  I didn’t really care but after checking it out, all I can think about was me and the G on month long trip out of the city and into the open country.  Ironically when I think about it the clincher in making my mind up to buying the G was when the wipers gave up on me returning home from picking up the hardtop for the SL and the same thing it’s what grounded my G.

Went back the next weekend and traded the SL for the G that was a year ago, the dealer had taken it in as a trade from a gentleman who had imported the G from South Africa with the body kit and interior already done as It was explained to me at the time of the purchase .  A fairly good job but with little regard to detail causing a multitude of minor, nonetheless annoying issues left to be addressed.  As a second vehicle I hardly put a km’s on it, got the G in the spring and by the fall it’s when these issues started to appear i.e. the stereo quit one day then the kick down switch failed then the hood release handle broke no big deal so far then it was the blower fan still no big deal the power windows worked to keep the inside from fogging up BUT the kicker the one that grounded me was when the wipers jamb straight up and I’m sure you know the cause. Sure I could’ve kept driving it on nice days only I guess having relocated the arm to a down position but the combination of fog on the inside of the windows and rain on the outside, which by the way Rain-X doesn’t work that well, just wasn’t an option anymore.  The problem with that is that here in Canada cars need to be fit and road worthy as I many other countries and if a cop caught wind of the wipers not working, becomes a fine and the vehicle possibly pulled of the road, let alone what could happen if I’m in an accident, a fine, court and the insurance company getting off without paying for anything.  There you have it that’s how she’s become a yearlong project with one thing leading to another and another …… you get the picture! I’m not really complaining I just want to drive it again.

I’m sure I’ll be getting in to a lot more of that later, currently I’ve being working on tying together the dash and centre console in order to make room for a high mounted double din audio/navigation system.  I also have in the back burner a OM606.962 diesel for the swap from a friend’s car who had an unfortunate meeting with a centre barrier and without a garage to do the work, so for now as winter hits us I’m preparing and trying to get all my ducks in row as much as possible so when the nice weather is finally here I’ll be ready to get done as much as possible.

Now as I mentioned before I’m a newbie and not the best with computers or the proper decorum on this or any other forum for that matter, so please excuse me if I screw up, simply put!  I’d like to tell and show everyone what I’ve been working on this past year.  As it happens, just to show my computer literacy, I can’t seem to figure out how to reduce the size of a picture to the require specs by the club, not even to put a picture in my profile. The smallest pic I have is for one of the others love in my life, my dog which is almost as big as the G and that pic is of 38kb’s  so I’ll place it here in this space along with a pic of my G as well.

My hope with that and this intro is for you guys to see them so you can get to know us a little better and hopefully help one another.  Having said that and with a little embarrassment, seeing it’s my first post I’m asking for help, I’ve tried some of Windows image resizer’s (FastStone Photo Resizer & PIXresizer downloaded from the net) and I’m not sure they’re doing the job.

I can’t seem to get the pics pixels to what is required to post them, I’m going to place the reduced one and hopefully they’ll be ok if not I’ll be trying again at a later time, so if anyone has a better way to resize the helps would be appreciated.

These two are the resized one’s and the one below was done by way of email

So there you have it, two of the three girls in my life, the other one is not a dog by any means and if I want to remain married, I better keep her private and all to my self.

I've noticed they didn't load up as i thought they would but in anycase there they are and i included one to give you a hint of what i've found and what i've beein up against

Re: Hello from Canada

Hello and welcome

Particularly liked the fact that you put the picture of your dog first. That is my sort of thing! I personally think it is interesting to get the background on why you have a G and there are others here who do the same, so keep going. You can get lots of good advice here as there as some very knowledgeable people on the site.

By the way, what IS your dog? Looks lovely

Hello and Welcome to the GWOA,

Well done to you for putting up your chassis details; people rarely do that. May I suggest that you have the chassis details as part of your signature so should you have questions regarding parts, people can be of practical help.

Please do not take offense but when I saw the picture of your 'woofy' it reminded me of that furry thing from Star Wars; Wooky, I think. :-)

Re: Hello from Canada

Thanks for welcome guys!

In answer to your question Audiomix, my dog is a Briard and she is as the wife calls her, "heer teddy bear" a 110 lbs teddy.

And you Pistonhead are absolutely right she looks or rather Chewie or Chewbacca from Star Wars was inspired by the breed, the story goes that the character creator owned a Briard a got his inspiration from his dog.  I've heard the same story about Elf, the alien character on tv who ate cats, much like a dog! right? I have never bothered to confirm any of that but who knows the resemblance is there.

Also, thanks for the signature suggestion which I've already included in my profile and hope was done correctly.

Re: Hello from Canada

Thanks Spder!V,

That's right! it was about time we got some an luckily, i had the pleasure of working at the authorized facility for them here in Ontario.

A treat alright! but not so much when it came time to lift parts off them, it always became a team effort just to remove a door.

I miss that place, a friend who as it matter of fact, dropped in yesterday for a visit so after a barbeque accompanied by a lot of wine and LOL reminiscing.  he mentioned to me that the one repair rotation was complete for now but they expect to get more G's before the summer.  i'll need to drop in and pay those guys a visit the next time they get a few more "G"I's in for repairs and get a bunch of the guys to come over to my place for a summertime barbeque.

Cheers!!
