Huss ,

I couldn't add pictures on the old topic so started a new one. below are the pics showing the positioning of the hella blackbox that you asked me about. basically, it fits on to the front of the electrical box. you need to attach it somewhere which is fairly perpendicular to the ground. On my pinz I could only find the bulkhead between the drivers seats and the passenger compartment to fit them (and had to extend the wires somewhat). Once you've done that, fitting is a straightforward afair....just make sure you put the right hand light on the right side and the left to the left. good luck/ph

Re: hella light 'black box' position

This is a cool after-market idea.  I looked them up and found a brochure here:
http://www.hella.com/produktion/HellaResources/WebSite/HellaResources/He...

But it says the following:

With the low beam switched on, the cornering light is
activated on the right or left without delay when the indicator
is operated, or automatically when driving round
bends at speeds up to 40 km/h / 25 mph.

So does that mean the corner illumination only works at slow speeds?  Not good for country lanes travelling at 50ish.

They also look like a tricky fit - body work skills required.

Re: hella light 'black box' position

hi jdring,

sorry, was out of the country and was late for my plane so left my laptop on my desk in all the haste......wasn't very popular!

To answer your question, I don't understand what they say in the brochure, as the cornering lights DEFINITELY work at higher speeds. The added 'view' they give on dark country or mountain roads is impressive. I don't know whether you can still buy them, but I'd recommend them to anyone if asked.

Spider, it looks good but sounds even better!........like yourself, can't get myself to sell it. It really is the most awesome G ever made.

Re: hella light 'black box' position

hi ph.
i had the hellas finally fitted today ! they look just right...!
please tell me ph, when the main beams of the hellasare switched off do the intelligent lights turn on when cornerning in your G ? i understood from your posts that they do. mine did not seem to come on. i also noticed this evening when i pulled up at my house and the hella main beams were on that the left intelligent bulb was dimly lit. is that normal ??

Re: hella light 'black box' position

 hi Hus,

The lights should come on when you select high beam: when you corner, they will adjust to the direction of vehicle travel.

The dimly lit beam on the left is exactly the problem I had on my Pinz: it was a bad earth, or more specifically a small voltage differential between the earth of the engine and the mounting point on the bulkhead. I found it using a voltmeter. Off the top of my head I can't remember exactly which one was which, but I think the earth cable that came out of the 'black box' (i.e. not the one that directly connects to the battery) is the one I put onto the bulkhead. I managed to get the lights to work by linking my bulkhead 'earth' to the battery earth with a physical wire from my attachment point to the negative terminal on the battery. The 'switching wire'-I think it was grey in colour - I took directly off the back of the lights main beam wire and fed it back to the bulkhead 'black box'.

I know that low beam beam thing is very annoying, but it is a relatively simple thing to fix. I think the electronics are very sensitive to earths because of the gyroscope inside that black box. Once you make sure that all the earth points are equal, then the lights should function as designed. I have not had any problems with them since fitting so, once done, the system is very robust.

I hope that helps.

Re: hella light 'black box' position

Surely they would be illegal if they operated on dipped beam. I'm surprised they even operate on dipped beam up to 25mph. I know many modern vehicles have cornering light combined with fog lights, and they can be a pain to other road users if the vehicle there fitted to is facing up hill.

Re: hella light 'black box' position

thanks for the info ph, much appreciated !!! so i conclude that the turning light only come on when the main beams of the hellas are swithced on. i will check the earth connections and post pics of where i fitted the black box [directly behind the battery on the firewall]

mark , laws here on the island a very strict !! i have to be careful where i use them.... so i had the hellas connected to the green switch suppiled in the package. this way they are independent from the G's main beams and fogs.

qaulity is brilliant, i would recomend them to anyone. the intelligent system is bonus on dimly lit country lanes.

ebay them from time to time for a steel !

Re: hella light 'black box' position

While we're on about lights, main beams ok, it's the dipped beam that is a bit rubbish on G's. Much improved since I fitted Osram night breaker plus's, there better then some of the 100 / 80w bulbs and last longer. These LED's look interesting. Silly money though.

Re: hella light 'black box' position

here's wher we fitted the black box.

btw, both the intelligent bulbs come on dimnly even  when the G is stationary. my friend that fitted them says that he connected the earth direct to the battery...... we will solve this issue !

Re: hella light 'black box' position

The Osram Night breaker plus aren't LED's, just a H4 bulb, may use Xenon rather then Halogen, but nthey are nothing like Xenon HID's,
The headlight replacements in the link are LED's, been mentioned over on P3 recently. Not for me, but if you could try them out and report back, that would be extremely kind.  With pictures!  :-)

Besides I'm dumping the G, moving to a modern commercial. Comfort, speed, economy and decent headlights. :-)

Re: hella light 'black box' position

Well, not 100% certain about getting rid of the G, hovering at around 95%  :-).
Van here soon.

Re: hella light 'black box' position

 Move on, G's are so 2011   ;-)

Of course there's no replacement for a G, just wanted something green, lol!  :-)
Can't wait to get a snorkel some low profiles and a lowering kit.  ;-)
