 Hi guys

The heater has stopped working on my 300gd 88 diesel. I noticed this about a week ago. Before on the 3rd heater setting it always made a noise but now there isnt any noise and it is not blowing any hot/ warm air it does ocassionaly come on but then stops it has not worked for days now. Any idea to what it can be? and can someone advise me on what checks i can do. I have checked the fuses and they all seem fine.

Also my passanger side window is not going up when down, the window handle just spins around when the window is half way up guess i need a winding up mechanisum as i have taken it out and given it a good greasing seems like the teeth have worn at some points. Has anybody got one for sale? and how much is a new one?

 Regards

Re: heater not working just stopped, also passenger window ...

One of the most common faults in 80s Gs

New motor and or restistor assembley (if you are doing one, the effort means you should do the other anyway and also take a good look at the heater core as they can corrode and leak.

Job ususally requires most of the dash to come out - people talk abotu 7,8,9 hours labour but having done mine, I'd say 4-5 probably. Recent quotes (late 2012)  from other members here have been for c. £500 labour +parts (about £180 for fan and £20 for resistor I think). Its not a cheap thing to fix unfortunately.

The good news is that it is all doable DIY (clubwagen article on it here), but you need to be patient and organised (bits to loose). Also  much of the plastic (heater controls facia and fan box) will be extremely brittle with age (not a job for the cold either!).

The only other alternative (other than a nasty bodge involving a vauxhaul astra fan gaffa'd to the intake which has been done I think) - others here have talked about a technique involving replacement via the air intake at the top of the bonnet.

Knowing a bit about what it loks like there down there I can see what they are talking about, but I'm not sure how happy I'd be doing it that way (even nibler fingers required). I think I'm right in saying that you also can't do the resistor this way if that is shot (sods law is is that  it will be if the fan is)

Hi Sati, just had same problem, I ended up getting local garage to change blower, I got the unit from Gav, see my post on the electrical forum(heater blower) there is lots of useful info there from other members, cost of labour was indeed £400 plus vat so if it is something you can take on it will save you a few quid. I did notice that my blower blew the fuse every time after only a few seconds of changing it. Good luck
