Heater controls - advice

Winter is round the corner and I am reminded how poor the heater unit on my 85 300GD is..

But more important is the fact that the direction control levers appear to be fitted to nothing. So how hard is it to user service these? These are the two horizontal levers that control distribution (the heat control lever does work).

And how much can you do through the facia once you have removed the split control surround? Or is it a case of taking the whole blower unit out - taking care to isolate the coolant loop first!

Thoughts greatly appreciated.

Just to say I do know getting the blower unit out is a 8-9hour nightmare job - hence why I am asking just about the control arms in case anyone knows a short cut I.e. Linkages just behind the trim?

Re: Heater controls - advice

It is possible to work the cable from the split fascia.  The cable controlling air direction is attached to a flap lever mounted on the driver's side of the center control.  Infact, it is possible to view the cable attachment from the drivers side, under the dash panel; it just requires a small cover to be removed.

The adjusting of the cable in relation to lever travel and attaching the "P"-clips can be fiddley and difficult.

You do not have to strip down to the heater matrix to work the the cables unless the matrix or heater itself is problematic.

I hope this answers your query.

Cheers,

Hi Rakesh

Many thanks for that.

Sounds like a bit of digging around is going to be worthwhile then. Pretty well versed on the G but know about the 'dash' horrors to only want to go there if it is going to be productive - spent enough time accessing wiper spindles through the removed glove box as it is.

thanks again
