OK here is one for you technical bright ones out there in GWOA land.

I have a G500 LWB 463 (2001). A few weeks ago I noticed that the off side main light started off dim and then would 'warm' up to a usual full brightness (am using the Halfords Extra bright). I also noticed on the dash the ‘main beam’ (blue on the dash) light would also show through , but rather dim on the dash. However the past few nights the dash board main beam has got a little brighter, however my head light is now only showing the running lights. So I did the usual and changed the bulb. Still have the same problem. Have checked the wiring looks to be all OK and solid, though on the ‘block’ that connects to the main bulb the brown terminal has slight corrosion, which has been there since I brought the G. I am flummoxed, any one out there have any advice or pointers that could help get me back on the ‘Bright and narrow’?

Many thanks

Re: Headlights

Hi The brown wire is the "earth"
it is imperative that ALL earth contacts/terminals have 100% integrity..
clean each one at the headlight and where it connects to the common earthing post on the inner wing ...there are nine major earthing points along the length of the G' any corroded ones will affect things like fuel guage readings  . oil pressure readings.difflocks etc
bicarbonate of soda ( in a paste form) is a good cleaner.then spray with contact cleaner.
.****** switches in the front door pillars are prone to corrosion so if your interior lights/seatbelt light are not working clean the switch and the threads in the hole the screw fits into....

Re: Headlights

Hi  Spider,

It sounds like an earthing fault: had something very similar on another car of mine. Whilst you're at it, check also that your battery is sound. If you have low voltage from the battery, electronics can play up a little.

Good luck,
Ph

Re: Headlights

 Hi All,

we have a successful resolution - Many thanks Mr Fixwin as you win the Spider1V seal of approval and thanks!  Took out the whole unit and removed the offending material and lo and behold we have light!

Thank to phileas - for his advice as well - new battery in less than a year or so ago - but did check all running fine, as you would know ;) these 500's are very good vehicles.
