Just a quick question. Happily driving to Portsmouth today and my glow plug light came on for a couple of minutes. It then went off again so I ignored it, but it also did the same thing on the way back. Dodgy connection possibly or new plugs needed?

Re: Glow plug dashboard light

you possibly have a glow plug gone open circuit and the light coming on is the fault indicator/there are possible alternatives to cause this to happen but unplugging the large black plug from the glow unit and doing a continuity test individually on all six should find atleast one that is open circuit, it is good practice to change all 6 to be doing the preventative 'thing' but just swapping out the dodgy one has its advantages also, just make sure you put some anti -seize compound on the threads when you fit the new one(s) .

Thanks for that. Would copper grease do as anti-seize compound or do I need to buy something specific?

I have successfully used copperslip, but this is one job you should not tackle yourself. Fixwin gave me good advice how to do it, which I suggest you pass on to you mechanic.

Park the car overnight, and next morning start the engine for a few seconds, until the engine starts getting to hot to keep your hand on. Now work like s#1t off a shovel and get all the plugs loose. After all are loose remove them and replace.

They are a bit fragile, and if one breaks off, it will be a headache; I find it easier to remove the head then, instead of all the gadgets available.

Also buy the best plugs you can find, the price difference is not that much, but good ones will last much longer.

Re: Glow plug dashboard light

Hi Audiominx,

Whilst the glow plug light coming on is an indication of fault developing or with fault; main question at present, is there difficulty in starting from cold? If yes, then it is likely the glow plugs are at fault here.

If no, then it is probable that, the glow plug relay is becoming or is with fault. Do have the connections to the relay inspected initially for security and connectivity.

Should the cause be glow plugs and these need to be renewed, get your mechanic to rimm the glowplug holes. Rimming is to shave off any built up carbon in the glow plug chamber. Glow plugs in contact with excessive carbon build up drastically shortens the glow plug life. I think you had an issue with glow plugs last year.

Your glow plug relay may be controlled by coolant temperature, do take note what coolant temperature reading is when the light illuminates and is the time when it comes on, the same?
