Hello, i know this has been done to death but i'm starting to get confused with all the gearbox part numbers around.

My G is a 1990 280GE (WDB46023227064483) to my understanding this would be fitted with a "old" MB 4-speed auto box.

If i'm to change to a OM605 250 TD i will need to change to a "New" MB 4-speed auto box (722.394/396)? Is it true that this actual box is only used on the G's and therefore if i fitted a 4-speed auto from a naturally aspirated 250d I would loose the lock up required for hill descents when off roading?

I would prefer to keep the car auto if possible but i guess it would be difficult/expensive to find a G 4-speed auto?

Is it possible to mate the om605 with the original box?

If not can how difficult is the transformation to manual?

Thanks for your help, i'm sorry if this subject is becoming a bit repetitive.

Matt

Hi

Just to confirm your first point, your 280GE was fitted from the factory with the old 720109 22 025182 4 speed auto box type W 4 A 018 sales option code G40. It looks to be a high spec vehicle for the age?

I will have a look for some more info tomorrow with regards to your future options

Re: Gearbox for 250 td conversion.

Starter is on otherside when you go to 60# engines in 460's.Check US forums on how to fit 5 speed auto with dedicated custom controller.
Not an auto fan but hear the good points for offroad work. 4 speed maybe lowgeared on mway
Why manual ? Pedal box change is only spanners and then you have the chioce of many getrag and mb 5 and 6 speed boxes from the car and light van range...easy/cheap to source...[Dronsfield , Mercland] Fit and Forget.

Re: Gearbox for 250 td conversion.

I've confirmed with Merc that the gearbox is 720.109 this morning, I guess the G is quite high spec but i'm unable to tell when and where the mods had been carried out. It has the Recaro buckets and im guessing these came from factory because they say made in Germany 1989 on them.

Yeah the gears on my box are quite low for motorway use as i do use the car everyday, i will check the forums out now about the 5 speed boxes. I do like the auto for offroad, i don't understand how the none G boxes would be without the gearing 'lock' for offroad use though, is this because they don't have gear select like the G boxes? (G-P,N,R,4,3,2,1)

Thanks for the help i'll try and find out the information with the 5 speed autos now and probably look towards the manuals.

Re: Gearbox for 250 td conversion.

Hello Tony, looking in to the manual how does the 711.620 from a sprinter hold up? Also what clutch, flywheel & pedal box do i need to find? Is there anything else i would need to buy?

I'm unsure towards the 602 or 605, probably edging more towards the 602 if im honest or 662 from the Musso.

I've found many of the 711.620 on dronsfields and according to a post on superturbodiesel the gear ratios are as follows:
5.05:1
2.6:1
1.52:1
1:1
0.78:1
R4.76
Which will give me a great first for off road and also an overdrive for the long motorway runs.

Just trying to get an idea of all the work involved and the parts i'll need before taking the plunge,

Thanks,
Matt

Hi Tony

My understanding is an "ordinary" MB auto will hold in second whilst a G auto box will hold in first.

Off road down steep inclines the hold in first - with low ratio - is all but essential. On the road  it would never be needed.

On the subject of replacement engines/gearboxes I am watching the forum with interest.

Re: Gearbox for 250 td conversion.

Hello again, i thought i would update you with where i'm upto with my engine swap.

I've managed to pick up a P reg C250 TD Manual with 120k on the clock for £560 so i'll be using the engine & gearbox from here. After much talking to Axel who has been such a great help and reading many of Tony's previous posts on the matter i know what must be done also, i thought i could give a list here for reference.

Need to swap the injector pump because the TD is electronic to the Musso injector, then get it turned up because its only 120ish bhp standard. Need to do! There is a Ssangyong breakers near Hull that give good price.

Get a big intercooler from an Iveco Van, already bought, lots available on ebay from van breakers.

Get the factory mounts from MB which are again a good price, about 180.

Sump needs notching to avoid fouling on the diff.

Need to have a plenum built on the inlet manifold to redirect to the intercooler mounted behind the grill? I think this is the reason?

Need to have to radiator recored to 52mm.

I think thats it for now? Tony, Mike, please correct me if i have missed anything. Hoping to start cutting my G up in the next week or so and then driving the 250 TD in the meantime until its transplant time, the car drives really smooth and pulls nice. Really impressed with it, taxed until december and MOT until febuary, almost a shame to cut it up!

Regards,
Matt

Re: Gearbox for 250 td conversion.

Thanks so much for that Mike thats fantastic. I'll ring the Hull breakers again tomorrow to request the pump, i understand the Sump now too, thats great. Okay with the inlet, might have a look in to buying a 606 manifold, there is a few cheap on ebay. Can't wait to get this done!!

Matt
