Cheap 6 speed if someone wants one. (It's not mine!)

Would this thing fit into a G?

Re: Gearbox
Not a direct fit, it's one of the boxes you can use to do a 6 speed & E Class engine conversion. Gordon

Re: Gearbox

Lots of things needed to swap that box in, but it,s not a bad price for a low mileage 'box.

Re: Gearbox

ML270 clutch and flywheel to 6** series engine is what you need ,not suitable for unconverted 460 G's

As those who have done the swap know it is a most lovely box and shift to use.

Re: Gearbox

Maybe I should have made the original post a little clearer.

As Tony says, only for an already converted G, or if you intend to convert a G to a 6 speed manual. These gearboxes will only fit the 60x series diesels, or the Ssangyong 662. Clutch, output drive flange and gear linkage all has to be adapted/modified.

Great gearboxes though, smooth shifts and nice low 1st with overdrive in 6th.

Hope this clarifies a few things. PS, they were never fitted factory to G's.

Re: Gearbox

Hi!

Looks like an interesting gearbox, not expensive or anything. What's with the strange part number though?

I can only see things like "R2032610701" - not the usual 716.xxx.

I've got a 602.962 engine in my W460 and have been looking for something to lower the RPM. Current gearbox is 1:1 in fifth gear.

Does anyone know what the absolutely easiest replacement would be for an overdrive fifth or sixth gear?

Best regards,
Mats

Re: Gearbox

Easiest is to fit taller tires, doesn't the 6 speed box have the same 1to 1 top gear ratio?

Re: Gearbox

I've already got 33" BFGoodrich tyres and they did help some.

I thought the sixth gear was something like 0,8 in most mercedes gearboxes?

Since these are my first posts here - this is the car today:

Re: Gearbox

overdrive gear on most 5 speeds / the cosworth 190e  2.3 and 2.5 have only 1 to 1 top gears . the gear boxes are very strong (motorsport spec used in the fast 190's) they are close ratio.

the 6 speeds all have over drive top gears usually .799 to 1 or .823 to 1 (same as the 5 speed boxes) but with a better spread of gears / norfolk66 (tim) saw this the other day as we were towing a heavy trailer it was nice having effectively half gears when bowling along keeping the 606a at 2000 rpm .

needamerc (eddie) and i brought an expedition g back from dorset the other day on my car trailer and we would of been over 5 tons gtw and we clipped along very nicely using the big torque and the spread of six close ratios to there best advantage and we got over 25 mpg ...

the gearchange quality is a different world compared to the multirod system especially if the remote unit is getting tired where this can kill the old 5 speed boxes by the selectors not being moved correctly damaging the baulk rings and syncro cones,463 i drove the other day with a crunchy old 5 speed (1st and 3rd gears on their way out and also a totally worn out dual mass flywheel)

Re: Gearbox

I have to concur with Axel, after driving his 6 speed conversions, they are very sweet. Behind the 606A you normally skip 1st, 3rd and 5th in most circumstances. When heavy towing all the gears are used and are very strong. Lovely spread of ratios to cover all requirements. Without a trailer you can tootle around country lanes at 30mph in 6th and then drop to 4th if you want to pick up the pace (dramatically). Only of course with a 606A up front.

Some 602A/662A's with 6 speeds are pending from Tony. Should be nice too. Another being built in Ireland.

Eddie.

Re: Gearbox

That sounds very nice, I'm revving my head off when driving long distance. I've also noticed that the fuel cuts out at around 3500rpm - not that I wan't to rev that high but anyway.

My plan was to tune my 602.962 to give me about 150hp - if I found a matching gearbox.

Is there anything that is practically bolt-on with this engine?
