can anyone advise / guide me on the correct placement of the 3 link rod arms stemming from the gear lever when installing the transmission for my 230 ge swb 460.  I notice there is a heavier duty rod with rubber gasket, one of the other 3 rods has tape around it as a marker i think! A little lost so its either advice here or a haynes manual..
THANKS

Re: gear lever link rod placement

Please find attached, a copy of selector rod arrangement off, of a 280 GE, I expect the 230 GE will be the same.

Hope it is of help.

Cheers,

Not sure if your car has it, but, on some G's there is an anti transmission twist 'rod' that is attached to the transfer case and comes forward as 2 rods with a bush housing on the end of it, this has a rubber 'ring' in it, maybe that's what you're looking at? It's about 15mm diameter.

Re: gear lever link rod placement

Hi, it is attached solidly to the left of the transfer case, one tube at the top and one at the bottom, they come forward to the left of the gearbox to meet at a bushing end, forming a triangle. This is then attached to the gearbox via a small rod which drops down vertically, rubber bushings at both ends of this. It's purpose is to stop the gearbox (engine and gearbox) twisting when torque is applied. Some say it's not necessary, but I couldn't vouch for that.

Re: gear lever link rod placement

I'm not sure if your G has this or not, or even that this is what you're seeing. If you look in the picture, you'll see at the forward end that it connects to the gearbox via a vertical rod with a rubber bush at either end. The gearbox bracket may be different on yours if your geabox is different to this one. If you post the first 6 digits of your vin then maybe we could see a more specific picture.

They started fitting these in 1982 it seems from that link but I do not have one my 1988 300GDS. They are not "required" but must take something of the buzz away from the transfer box shaft.

These linkages are on a different scale to the shift linkage.. it must be near twice the size.

Re: gear lever link rod placement

Thanks for this advice, found were it goes, the rod sticking out at bottom left of photo, near were the prop goes, just a washer and bolt hold it on, done this morning and nearly there which is very exciting.
