I have a 2001 LHD G500.  At some point it is going to need a new exhaust system.  I would like to have a custom ss system fitted following the same lines as a G55 (straight down each side coming our before the back wheels with no silly centre box in the middle like the G500).

Any recommendations (pref who have already done one) where I can get this done.  Located in Cheshire.

These guys are close but it doesn't look like they do MB.  Is is hard to do something without all the tech spec?  They look good at bending the pipes.

Re: G500 exhaust

Dan,
I used a place called stainless exhaust specialist or similar in Mansfield. Just off the M1. They have done custom work for Tony Baskil before. They also put a ss system on my 300gd
Does your exhaust currently exit on both sides of the engine?
You could buy the amg system from MB. The attached pics are of the sports system offered by MB on the latest G550 and has a very pleasant sound.
There is a risk that any custom system may be louder than you are happy with.
I'm interested in hearing what you decide to do as my G will require a new system in the new 12mnths or so. Mine exits the engine from the rhs as a twin system and then crosses over to the lhs like the earlier Gs.

Re: G500 exhaust

Hi
maximum efficiency of the G500 engine is impaired by the mandatory catalytic converters          .   I have a local muffler shop fabricating for the 460 /463 up to 1993 exhaust systems comprising tandem boxes from the twin down pipes with the outlet forward of the drivers side rear wheel.   no difference is decibal readings  compared to those of the original MB exhaust system.... 10%  better performance with lower fuel burn and lower rpm readings at 60mph than with the MB conventional exhaust system...fabrication and installation costs less than GBP 375  inc vat ..    not much experience of the V8 but feel that a similar tandem two box system on each side in conjunction with the cat's might well improve things overall......as there is no G500 to look at in Northern Ireland  I cannot measure up or study the interfacing that must be done prior to cutting metal.......

Re: G500 exhaust

I used a company called TopGear to build a new exhaust for my 460, stainless steel single box side exit, £800. They have branches around the country.

"Ask and you get..."
I have, had no experience of JP exhausts, but, looking the quality of their web-site, it seems they are capable of doing the job.  I expect, them to keep your vehicle so they can use your system to use as a pattern to work from.

You mentioned, that they seemed not to do M/Benz, regardless, that does not mean they can not or will not do the job.

As far as technical specifications are of issue, I am sure they will supply them.

Rakesh.

Re: G500 exhaust

Peter,
What type of silencer do you use on your exhaust systems. What does the inside look like? I can't work out how MB require three and you can achieve the same noise reduction with a single one. I would like to use a single large silencer (after the cat) on the 500 but am concerned that the noise level would be unacceptable.

Re: G500 exhaust

If you read Peters post he says he uses tandem  boxes on the down pipes. I read this as one for each down pipe or two boxes in total.

I run one large box on my s/s system exiting on the drivers side which makes the exhaust just a bit to loud (according to my wife).

Re: G500 exhaust

Hi
on the 463  petrol up to 1993 I use two elongated oval boxes ( Manufactured in the UK) these replace the cat' and the first box of the original MB system.they are mounted inline/tandem and can have either twin small bore outlets forward of the drivers side front wheel or a slightly larger single outlet.....pipe bore sizes are as per the existing pipes that MB bring the dual manifold outlet pipes into..the final outlets are smaller bore to compensate for the back pressure required in order to tune the K Jetronic mechanical fuel system...for the diesel the same technique applies only the pipework forward of the boxes picks up on the single pipe that the dual pipes from the manifold join into....any SWB model G'  that requires a Cat by law ( after 1993 on the petrol) does not have room for two boxes.and any v8 with exhausts either side of the block and cat's presents geometry problems Muffler system comprises three baffle segments in one box and two in the other

Re: G500 exhaust

Hi Peter
That makes sense. My v8 would be the same system as any post 93 petrol with twin parallel cats prior to the first silencer. Have you installed your system on a lwb with cats successfully? There wouldn't be enough room for two silencers. You may have to keep one in the centre and exit on the LHS

Re: G500 exhaust

Hi Roly
I have measured up the V8 LWB with exiisting exhausts running along either side..there is room for my two box system after the cat's with outlets on both sides in front of the rear wheels but most of the benefit will be lost because the cats create too much back pressure for the engine to work to maximum efficiently.. one cat in the system would make for even worse efficiency.....

Re: G500 exhaust

Please see my other post.  It is a ss system and I got JP exhausts of Macclesfield to replace the clamps (rusted) for £100.
