Just what Tony Says really. If you can do a search on the forum, you can find some common issues with them, but best to put a post out where you are or where the G is and I am sure a member will pop out and take a look for you. Its customary to at least cover the petrol cost and maybe a snack of some sort. Always goes down well. If you want a professional job then there are one or two members on here that can do that and provide you with expert knowledge and experience, well worth the investment either way.

Re: G reg short wheelbase 2.8 petrol G wagon

Hi its the one on EBay Mercedes-Benz G Wagon 280 GE-A2 Auto 121152154668. It is in Bedford, Bedfordshire and I am in Somerset. It sounds ok but ... I know condition can vary on these I got caught on one from Scotland that had allegedly been completely reconditioned. Looked great on the re sprayed paint work but completely rotten underneath. Its up on ramps and body needs lifting off to replace upper rear shock absorber mounts. Lots of other places need major welding..

this one? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mercedes-Benz-G-Wagon-280-GE-A2-Auto-/121152154668?pt=Automobiles_

Looks ok but there are no interior shots and this is a dead giveaway for abuse. No under bonnet shots either. My guess is that its been resprayed black as it was an exceptionally rare colour on a w460 series vehicle but ever so popular as a modification. The auto is a thirsty beast don't expect more than 13/14 mpg, the diesels are agricultural so the ge230 is the best all-round choice [Axel will disagree as will Tony B]. Ask about service history, number of owners and usage...the towbar on the bumper sometimes suggests off roading. You also want the 5th wheel as they are expensive to replace. Check out the front carpets for leaks from the windscreen wipers, and the condition of the seats, spares for w460 interiors are difficult to source and costly. If the car has stood any length of time outside the front callipers are most likely seized, I can’t see an exhaust pipe at the rear this suggests it may have a plastic tank; this is good as the tanks rust and rot from the top down. The 280 auto though has a nice smooth engine that revs freely and will hustle you along provided you can stomach the fuel bills

Re: G reg short wheelbase 2.8 petrol G wagon

Thanks everyone for your help. Never realised the auto petrol used as much fuel as that. That is more than the 3.9 Range Rover I had. Think I will work on the G 300D F reg I have until I can get the money together for a 1990s short wheelbase 6 cylinder model. Something about Gs that is addictive.

Have a look at as many as you can before you make a final decision; don't rule out the ge230 it will give you 20+ mpg, the 5 cylinder diesel will give you 25 mpg  on a run and it will run on chip fat and vegetable oil but its slow.

this one might be worth considering, the advert is quite open; check out the paintwork and the fuel tank, the interior colour went with light or white paint so this is no original but it might be worth a punt

Regarding mpg. I think it will depend on what type of driving he does. My 280GE is a long wheelbase and mpg has gone up from it's usual 10-12mpg around the Welsh hills to 16mpg in the last 500 miles of pure motorway driving at 70-85 fully loaded.

The SWB 280 might get 18mpg??Possible. Looks much nicer to me (not sure about the intake on the engine). Is it turbo'ed or on carbs?

Re: G reg short wheelbase 2.8 petrol G wagon

Mine is SWB 280 with 5-speed manual box. Recently did 200 motorway miles at 65-75mph + 20 miles off-motorway and fuel consumption was 20mpg overall. Measured by brimming tank and mileage c/o satnav. I reckon on about 15-18mpg on country roads driven reasonably sensibly.  That was on 245 / 75 / 16 BFG MT's and I've just changed to same size General Grabber AT2's, which makes the truck feel much livlier so maybe improved consumption.

Manual makes a big difference; I get 19/20mpg  with my ge300 day in day out in mixed use but can get 25 at steady speeds on a m-way

a manual ge280 in Cheshire

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1985-MERCEDES-280-GE-M2-BLACK-/151097282163?pt=Automobiles_

bit of an interior match and mismatch going on and the pictures are too poor to assess the body work

or a lwb manual in Market Harborough

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1985-MERCEDES-280-GE-M4-BLACK-/221264087995?pt=Automobiles_

interior is nice in that the front seats are recaro but the colour is wrong for black body work, its Irish plate is worthless
