Hi all

Thought some may be interested to see my current project.
Here: https://picasaweb.google.com/109363912786460931318/BodyWork?authuser=0&a... are pictures of the body I'm restoring. Apart from the floor, which is pretty bad, the rest of it is in excellent shape, even the rear quarters are as new. It has double doors at the back. Nearly finished the left, the right floor not so bad.

Here: https://picasaweb.google.com/109363912786460931318/Transmission?authuser... are pictures of the transmission I'm preparing to mate behind a brand new Musso 2.9TD. In phot 8 that's the engine sitting in the crate...... This transmission is a 711 651, capable of 370NM of torque, out of a 2010 sprinter, 6 speed, very low 1st and reverse, also has good overdrive. I had to mill a special shaped cap to seal the opening for the concentric slave cylinder bleed, it has a removable cap on the sealing cap to allow bleeding. Breathers have been fitted into the bell housing and Gear housing. The change mechanism, originally cable will be direct rod as per normal G, except 7 gates of course.

Hope it's all of interest to some.

Cheers Scott

Re: G project

Hi Rakesh

Thanks for the interest. I'm not really keeping track of the hours, but I can assure you it is many! That body work is very time consuming, I'll be pleased when it's done and I move on to the more interesting mechanicals.
I'll try to keep posting as it develops. Cheers Scott

Re: G project

Hi,

I`m doing something like that too, building G for offroad, like TR1 class in Ladoga. Started in february when I lost my OM617a and decided to change to OM605 2.5td. I have 80` SWB, now exchanged my axels for slowest, bigger and restored to good shape. Now trying to put OM605 (rebuild turbine mechanical and bought OM602 mechanical pump, less electricity better) in place. Gearbox I think I bought the same from spinter. Now I have two problems only, I want plungers 7.5-8mm(I have OM602 2.5 manual pump) and coudn`t find them, trying to find contact to Myna Disel in Finland or anybody who can sell them...  Maybe somebody know how to buy them? :)
Other problem is with dual mass flywheel, want to remake maybe gearbox to use simpler and cheaper to exchange as older clutch I had. Maybe somebody done that?
It will be interesting in the end to get legal on the road... :)
Good luck with your project!

Re: G project

I've been getting some work done recently on this project. I've got the old engine out now (250GD) and have swapped the timing chain cover, (gives proper dipstick location), sump, and changed the oil pump on the new (Ssangyong 2.9TD) engine. For those that want to know, the engines are pretty much physically identical, so the swap goes ok. The sump is the biggest change, you also have to change the main bearing cap bolts on no. 3 main to the bolts that are threaded in the heads to carry the oil pick up support. It's sitting in the chassis now with the new gearbox behind it. All fitted no problem. Now on to connect the gear linkage, which is completely different! I'm modifying the system out of a sprinter to give me the 6 speeds I need to select. Should turn out well as I'm making the gear lever sit higher to give a more comfortable driving position. Here's a link to photos https://picasaweb.google.com/109363912786460931318/Engine?authuser=0&aut... Also pretty much finished the body work, it will be painted soon. You can see in the photos, I modified the battery tray to carry 2 good size batteries, 1 deep cycle/starter. Photos here https://picasaweb.google.com/109363912786460931318/BodyWork?authuser=0&a... Will try to keep updating.

Re: G project

Hi Huss, I don't understand why that link won't work, maybe someone can help? I've set so people with the link can access it. I'll try a few other things.
I'm working very hard on this project at the moment, I'm supposed to set off on a major journey in January, still a lot to do!
The gearbox is a 711.651, from a 311 Sprinter, but used in many. In the states it's called an NSG370, being rated at 370NM, so plenty tough enough. Good low 1st and a slight overdrive.

Scott.
I found your transmission photos here:
https://picasaweb.google.com/109363912786460931318
Maybe put the rest of the photos there?
In Picasa you need to be signed in yourself before you cut and paste links, that could be the problem.

Here is a link (for example) to my photos comparing Schwitzer and Garrett turbos from OM617's:

Would be very interested to see more of your project.
Eddie.

Re: G project

Some photo updates of my project. Supposed to leave next month (!) for the drive to Australia, should manage. Got Iran visas the other day, so all coming together.
Hope the links work. Body at paint shop now. Gearbox/engine permanently in now. Gear linkages almost complete, this has been one of the most time consuming fabrications, but I need to make absolutely sure that it's at least MB standard. I'll post some more of the rolling chassis/engine etc later.

Re: G project

Below some photos of the project. Pic 7 just shows the shortened 'rod' or stabilizer from gearbox to transfer.

Re: G project

hi stig.

you have twisted my arm mate! i am going down the same line as you... just ordered the 6 speed sprinter gearbox , purely because my cabrio is now being built as an off road manily beast. the gearbox seems the best option .

i was considering a 6 speed from a saloon like mike but my use of the G will mainly based on off roading..

my mechanic recently fitted a 606a toalwb 460 toegther with a 5 speed sprinter gearbox. he retsained the cable mechanism and insists on using the same concept on my cabrio G.

whats the latest on the project?
