 Hi

My 300GD LWB 88 model front passenger side wheel requires new bearings, seals, and king pin bearings.

Does anybody know wheres best to source these parts?. Also part numbers?

I am based in wolverhampton west midlands.

Parts you want can be best got from Mercedes-Benz dealers; the bearings can be sourced from local bearing specialists but you need the bearing numbers to order from them.  Seals and core plugs; these may as well be dealer parts.  Of course, ebay is another source but not sure if they are sold from stock or ex-stock.
I am pre-pared to give you part numbers but on the understanding you get the dealer to double check as you have not provided chassis number and, or axle number and a further condition if my computer gives me access on the internet.

I'll try to get back.

Cheers,

Howard,
Thanks for pages from manual - do you really need all those 'specialist' tools - or realistically what is the minimum you can get away with? Appreciate might depend on condition somewhat, but is this still something I could do using a fairly standard tool kit?
Cheers

Hello Sati,

Your parts list.  Confer with your dealer, as you will see some part numbers are up to, and from certain chassis number or axle number.

Some parts, like the CV boot you will only confirm after a strip down.  Some parts offer alternative numbers etc.

Good Luck.

OEM bearing manuafacturers such as SKF have KITS available for both Front & Back of the G-Wagen (460 & 463). The 460 is VKBA1397 I think (check this).

The Kit does not include the King Pin Bearing but I would think that the SKF agent or similar could look that up for you.

I hope that this helps.

REPLY TO THREAD NUMBER 4:

Hello Stewart,

The instructions Howard, has put up, cover only half of the wheel bearing, there is another race bearing to this set which is housed in the hub; this has to be removed.

You can get away doing this job with some basic tools but in order to over come the specialist tooling, one needs to adapt to the situation.  For example, in the instructions, to check wheel bearing there is a clamp fitted on the hub and the clamp's handle rests against an axle stand, for support; you can do away with the clamp, partially screw in two wheel bolts in the hub, support the axle stand on the two protruding screw heads and weight the wheel bolts on the axle head, this will do the same job as the clamp does.

You will need a torque wrench capable to torque up to 220Nm.  A long and strong breaker bar of 1/2" drive.

Strong quality 19mm socket, preferably in a hexagonal head; the 12 point socket may be weak and I have broken a few.

Cheers,
