Hello all!
anyone know of a bolt on under drive available for g wagens? to give me some super low  gearing for off road? for a 300GE manual?
the gearing is good in general on muddy courses and on steep ground but for the rocky stuff i have slip the clutch alot.
thanks, Bren.

Re: underdrive?

lowering the gearing on a 463 is not that easy...if your is manual maybe a lower geared gearbox is an option. or a diff change would give you lower gears. your G probably has 4.9 diffs. 5.33 is the only upgrade option you have. these were available on early underpowered 460's like the 240 GD and 230G.
these are all costly modifications however !

and dont forget, it will affect cruising on the motorway......

Re: underdrive?

hey thanks for the reply,
yep its a manual but already running 5.33 in the diffs. its fine on the road, although doesn't get used much for road driving. off road its okay for most situations or when i can give it a bit of juice at least. the problem is with rock crawling sections! just wondering if there are any aftermarket underdrives available? or any ideas on how to get some lower gearing? without resorting to putting smaller tyres on? any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated! what are the lower gearbox options?

Re: underdrive?

I’m of the same opinion re. low range 1st on G’s. I’ve only got slightly oversized tyres and that’s enough to affect slow, low range manoeuvres.
Anything fitted with 32inch or above tyres on standard transmission must be a complete pig.
Apart from altering diff ratios as per Huss' post I’ve never heard of any “bolt on” solution.

IMHO easiest/best solution is to fit an auto box.

Re: underdrive?

hi russ...
was wondering about the autobox option! although the auto box gears must be even longer than the manuals if its a four speed? at least i wouldn't have to burn clutches? any known problems with the autoboxs? overheating? i'm in spain at the mo so it gets quite hot in the summer and i do enjoy my competitions so it will get worked quite hard?

Re: underdrive?

if the 711-110 'van gearbox ' would fit  [and i dont see why not ]   you will really be crawling in 1st gear...!!

pm dentysmith,  he has that gearbox fitted to his 230 ges, although he fitted it so he could run 35's. that gearbox has a crawler 1st.

Re: underdrive?

looks a "wolf" box would do the business alright! as my car is W463 and looks like the bell housing is different on the 463? is there a bell housing available that will allow put one on my G? or has anyone put a military box on a 463? any other mods that would be needed? mounts? props?
also what sort of money do these boxs go for and are they hard to get?
if its possible to put one in will try get my hands on this one on ebay now.
sorry bout all the questions but new to g's crossed over from the dark side last year! land rovers
