Hello all, can someone tell me whether the 2 different engine mounts, ie there is the triangular or round type, are in the same position? What I want to know specifically is: I have a 280 that I want to put a diesel in to, so will the diesel engine mounts mate to the existing round type mounts of the 280 chassis? Cheers

Re: Engine mounts

Hello Stig,

Could you be more specific on the engine type you want to use?
OM616s (240GD) and OM617s (300GD) are compatible with both the 'round' and the 'square' type of engine mounts.

'Round' type engine mounts have been used on the earliest of 460 models (upto around chassis end number 025500) whilst the 'square' type engine  mounts made it all the way upto the latest 463 models.

The 'square' type engine mounts themselves vary slightly across the model range mainly on a stiffness basis.

The chassis mounted supporting brackets for the 'square' type engine mounts are common to a great variety of models.

In order to fit the newer 'square' type engine mounts you will need to replace the two supporting brackets which are welded onto the chassis. Most probably you will need the following parts:
A460 241 17 02 (GLP 20.46 Euros) and A460 241 18 02 (GLP 21.93 Euros) for the right side
A460 241 24 02 (GLP 52.49 Euros) for the left side (by the way GLP is German List Price without VAT).

'Square' engine mounts are far more reliable and longer lasting than the 'round' ones. They also perform better.

I can be more helpful to you if you could provide both your vehicle's VIN (chassis number) and the new engine's number (or at least its' type).

Regards

Michael

Re: Engine mounts

Hi Michael

Thank you, that explains everything. I will change the mounts in that case. I'm fitting a Musso 2.9 TD. Regards Scott

Re: Engine mounts

Hello Scott,

The Musso 2.9TD is actually a Mercedes-Benz OM602 engine. In my opinion it's one of the best choices one can make in fitting the particular power unit. I would suggest that you replace the Musso's oil pan with the respective Mercedes-Benz part in order to avoid potential interference problems with the front axle (part number A602 014 26 02, GLP 429.40 Euros). In such a case you will also need (at least ) a new oil pump (part number A602 180 19 01, GLP 206.88 Euros).

Regards

Michael

Re: Engine mounts

Hi Michael

Yes I think this engine is very good too, in fact excellent. The one I have is actually brand new, never been out of it's box, I picked it up at an auction. I have a sump off a G already, also have a 6 speed Merc manual gearbox (sprinter 311 yr '10 with only 10000mls) with very low first and a good over drive in 6th. I prefer auto, but this G is driving to Aussie eventually and I just prefer to have a manual for that trip. It will also have an air to water intercooler as fitted to 461 290's. I know one can buy a G with all this sort of stuff, but half the excitement for me is building it. A nice project I think. Cheers.
