Starter Solenoid
Nice to have the forum back. Looking for some feedback on a G issue.
I had a problem with my starter which I guesstimated was solenoid. Went to local dealer and ordered part. Part arrives in merc box sealed with gaffer tape and contents turn out to be very 3rd party (i.e. not bosch) looking solenoid, a part which is available for half the price from my local auto electricians. Am I right to feel cheated? Or is this the norm now.
If it were me - Cheated!
Most of the Merc parts boxes I have seen have not had gaffer tape on! And I happened to read this before I went down to see my garage and so asked them. Usually if there is a seal or something it will be in either white or blue and have the words 'void' printed on it to prove its not been opened before hand.
Could it be one of the chines 'rip off' parts some dealers are getting in? (There was an article about MB parts and counterfeit in one of the MB owners mags last year)
Hope this helps

With parts that are often re-manufactured (starter, alternator, etc) I'd go with a local reputable auto electrician, he'll be able to advise you on what brands he uses and with what success rates, and can probably still get you a Bosch part if you so desire, but be advised that lately even Bosch-branded stuff comes from everywhere but Germany, they seem to buy cheap as well :(

I have to chalk this one up to experience. With Mercedes supplying the same parts (Hungarian) as the auto electrician and at twice the price, I'm going to have to think twice about using them any more. All the time I felt I was getting the higher quality part I don't mind paying the extra money, but it looks like that just isn't the case these days.
