280GE valve stem oil seals
Has anybody replaced the valve stem oil seals on a 280? is it possible to do without taking the cylinder head off? I have just purchased a genuine 60000 mile swb but it puffs a bit of blue smoke first thing in the morning and also if its been idleing for a few moments. If I need specialist tools to do it without removing the head that wouldnt be a problem, but I am a little reluctent to take the head off just for this.Any info would be greatly appreciated.thanks
Hi Simon,
I haven't done it on mine yet, but quickly looking at the manual for the 280 123-series(same engine) it seems that it would be possible, provided you'd be able to withdraw the cams from the head - on the 123 you can but not sure about the G. Doesn't look like you're need any special tools but it might be an idea to get yourself a Haynes manual no. 677 or similar.
Let us know how you get on...
on a 230 or 280 I would not expect stem seals to go until 120000 miles, you sure its only a 60000 miler. I was told it can be done but make a proper job and skim the head and re-seat valves as well.
Valve seals can be changed in situ, but if they need doing I would agree that the milage is probably higher than you are lead to beleave,Try an oil change and run on a heavier viscos oil, say 15w40 don't use syntheyics they are too thin add a friction modifier to the oil too that can help, some times a carbon build on the stems can have a smokey effect, squirt some redex in the intake with the filter removed and give it 50% rpm for a couple of mins," thats a dealers decoke" make sure the exhaust is away from any nice drive ways because it will blow the crap out.
