Hi all,

I really have a selfish reason for posting.... and Im sure your used to it..... and Im sure you've guessed it. Im hoping to join your ranks and looking for info.

Im no stranger to Mercedes as we've always had them in the family but never owned one my self, at the moment I've a golf as the daily driver and a Karmann Ghia for my sins. Im hoping to add a G to that in the near future. I've been after one for a while but have been put off by the relativly high prices.

Recently I've being toying with the idea of trading in the golf against a late 90s CLK, I've also considered a mid 90s E320 Coupe and so on and so on, but I've come back to the idea of a G Wagen and Im ready to move.

I've been lurking on your boards for a while and picking up bits of info but what I need is an idiots guide to buying a G. I live in ireland and the selection over here is limited so I will probalby be buying from the UK. So in order of not wasting the journey over I'd like to have an informed list of questions to ask the seller before I jump on a plane.

The model I will most likely go for is a late eighties early 90s SWB 280 GE. Now I now these engines go for a while and if the worst happens should be easy enough to find replacement parts. What I dont know much about is known issues in general (body work, drive shaft, suspension etc) so this is where you guys come in.

All info, suggestions, etc greatly appreciated

Thanks all

Redmond

Hello All

Welcome to the fourms.

Firstly there is pretty much all the buying advice you will need under the Buying Advice section.

Secondly if you are purchasing in the UK from Ireland, both the RAC and AA offer services where they will go check a car out for you and post you back a pretty comprehensive checklist. You don't need to be a member to use the service, just check the appropriate website. I found this invaluable as it will save you unecessary flights to check things out!

Good luck!
