Some advice please.. a month ago I returned to my G after a 2 week holiday (G had not been used) When I started the engine there was a loud noise from the enine area almost like there was an alarm I hadn't known about. I turned the engine off but the noise continued, after smoke started coming out I got underneath and found the noise came from what I supposed to be the starter motor (i'm not too hot on mechanics as you may have guessed) I did have enough knowledge thankfully to know that a good whack with a solid object can rectify the problem which it did. Everything has been fine since then with regard to starting untill today when there was nothing there, a quick whack again sorted it.
Can anyone tell me what they think I should do, replace motor or can it be checked out, any other advice? I have 130 odd thousand miles on the clock, I presume it is the original starter motor,
thanks

Dodgy starter motor

Although this sounds different to my problems see the thread below, it maybe of some help.

People replying to my thread said that 280’s were prone to oil leaking in to the starter, which caused problems similar to which you describe (mine didn’t suffer from this). Given your description it does sound like the starter is not disengaging once the engine has fired up.

Looks like you will need to remove it. A pig of a job!! You will need a GOOD quality ¼ inch extension bar with a universal joint and a 10mm allen key.

While you are at it suggest changing the solenoid and inspecting the brushes. Not big money and will save you the hassle of taking the thing off again.

Thanks for the advice Russ, it does look pretty oiled up under there so could be getting in. I will get it checked out when I eventually get it serviced. How much wear/damage has there been done to the motor if it was going crackers for 5 miniutes or so as I described in my initial post?
