Yes I've done that. Put pretty much 100% of sunflower oil in first to see what would happen. Was a 250GD, the OM602 2.5na engine. It ran very well, the idle was actually quieter, a little less diesel knock. Was maybe a little lumpy on a cold start. Power was the same. I then ran it at about 50/50 diesel, no problems, and it smells like a chip shop everywhere you go!

This is my corrected draft, earlier (no one would have had chance to read it) I had reported that there could be a levy to pay but now I stand corrected; this levy had been rescinded back in 2007 as the links I have attached will show. I have not fully read the attachment (too busy) but it should prove useful to those of you who are earnestly interested.

The first link is an interesting read, the second shows that, there is no levy due if less than 2500 liters is produced or used please check for your selves. The last link is the Customs & Excise stand point - don't have time to read and digest it all.

Re: Filtered vegetable oil in a 300gd non turbo

Hi

I only did it as an experiment so never had enough time to see how filters would react. But, I  think at 50%, and the oil was clean, there shouldn't be a problem. Cheers Scott

Might be a problem when temperatures are low or near freezing, someone was offereing a kit which acted as a heater to keep it a bit more liquid, price of a fuel filter, nothing compared with the savings you will make!

advice Yes - if you don't want it, I'll use it!!!!!!

Used for a few months couple of years back and ran almost neat and had no issues (if you don't mind smelling like a chip shop as noted) - at 50/50 I would expect it to be great. I did renew all my original (old) fuel pipes but only as precautionary measure (well, they needed to be done). I would use again, but as you indicate at about 50/50 if I had relaible cheap source (price I was paying wasn't sufficient saving). Enjoy.

Happy Christmas,

Stewart

Re: Filtered vegetable oil in a 300gd non turbo

The local green community use almost anything oily in their T1 207 /308 up to 811 models.

My advice is to make sure that the" fuel" is WATER free [settlement tank] and clean - body shop cone filters are excellent for this.

One guy who services cranes has used  a 90% hydraulic oil/ diesel mix for many years in his 508 camper.

Be careful with kerosene - 28sec burning oil - it has a higher calorific value than diesel and can lead to piston melt down.

There are also fuel duty implications.
