Hi everyone, I have just bought a 1991 model g wagon and the fuel gauge never goes below half way (stays between half and full) and also the temperature gauge goes straight up to 120 on start up but settles down after a while to a mid reading all other gauges work. Replaced temeparatue sender which did not fix the problem. As 2 gauges do not work does anyone know if there is a fuel/temp stabiliser fitted which stabilise these 2 gauges. Can't find anywhere selling a workshop manual as I assume next stage will be to remove dash board - any help appreciated. Thanks mr martin

Hello mr martin,

The temperature sender unit; are sure it is the correct sender unit you have replaced?  There is one for the temperature gauge and one is for a signal to the ECU.  You should have the one with a single post connection to it.  Disconnect this terminal and with the ignition on, there should be no reading on the gauge.  Bridging the connections on the single post will send the gauge reading hot.

The fuel gauge not reading below half suggests to me that the sender unit requires dismantling and cleaning up, perhaps due to a build up of bacterial body and, or you have a poor earthing strap at the fuel sender unit.

The fuel sender unit is accessible from the rear floor panel, under the carpet or floor lining.

Cheers,

mr martin

Thanks Rakesh, we did replace with single post type as was existing. We also checked with no reading and hot reading.
Do you know if there is a stablilising unit for both gauges?
thanks Martin

Re: faulty temperature gauge and fuel gauge

Hello Martin,

I will check on that for you, but I think, the answer is No, there is no voltage stabiliser fitted.

Please tell me, did you bridge the disconnected single post?  Doing that, should give you a reading one way or the other.  If you have not got a reading, then it is likely, the gauge is at fault, which will need checking or a poor earth connection on the Instrument panel.

The faults you have, are not linked, unless they share an earthing point.  I have no means to verify that for you as yet, I will make a few enquiries.

Congrats on the purchase!

From my experience with a '91 300GE, the fuel level hardly goes below half as there is a loose hose inside the fuel tank, that means the last 25 litres or so of fuel are not usable, so you start getting "empty" symptoms when you get down to about 1/3 of the tank.

This was confirmed by conversation with another G enthusiast from Germany, who advised the best way to overcome this was to get a new tank, or live with it!
