 Hi
Our 300D has suddenly developed a starter motor problem - small click, no action.

I'm guessing most likely cause is solenoid, but it seems best course of action is to replace starter motor (we're well into second hundred thousand miles).

Can anyone recommend a good (cheap) source for a reconditioned starter motor?

Can we fit one from a Mercedes 300D saloon, which may be easier to find?

Can the solenoid be fixed?

Thanks in advance,
Regards
Jim

Hello Jim, Before condemning the starter, check out the Battery and terminal connections; these being good you can look at the starter. I have complied a small list for you of re-conditioned starters, but I needed to ask if you will require your vehicle or can you afford it to be off road until repairs are complete?  Could you say what part of the country you are in?

The solenoids can be repaired, rather, replaced but if your vehicle has done 70 - 80,000 miles; I would suggest to have the starter motor to be re-conditioned as a matter of course; usually by that mileage the brushes do wear out any way. You need to be aware, that aside from starter faults, there could be a fault at the ignition socket, by the steering coulomb or the starter switch its self; these are rare instance The starter motor is number sensitive, hence different part numbers depending on engine number; I do not know what the differences are between the starters yet.  There are three different part number for starters to the 300GD. Further more, starter motors are conditional to the vehicle being either LHD or RHD and, or being Manual or Automatic.  Checking starter motors from saloon models show totally different part numbers to G-Class version, but having said that, I have fitted saloon starter motor into a 280 GE from a saloon version of the same engine with out functional problems.  I think the differences of saloon starters is that they do not have some degree of water proofing to allow for fording the e vehicle of extreme wet conditions. Therefore, the incidence of starter failure is higher should you off road. Try the url addresses I have given, or ask your local motor factors to price you an exchange starter, either by Lucas, Bosch or any other make.  If you cannot afford your vehicle off road, buy an exchange starter, paying the surcharge they levy; this will refunded to upon surrender of your old unit.   Cheers,
