The speedo on my 2001 290TD has stopped working; it occasionally fluctuates wildly for a few minutes during a journey and then stops working at which point the mileometer also stops working. I've taken it my local garage but they couldn't work out what the problem is and I'm very reluctant to take it to the Merc dealer since I suspect that they'll replace every part that they can think of at vast expense. Any ideas ?

Oooh it can be bad, if it is a lwb, even worst. Better sell the car to me, I don't mind taking away your problem for you.

If you decide to takle it yourself, I had a similar problem, turned out to be the speedo gear on the diff, can't remember how much it was, bit was dirt cheap. I also changed the speado cable at the time, as it was stiff with old oil, and probably the cause of the stripped gear.

Re: Faulty Speedo

Hi Simon,

Your vehicle has no Speedo cable, instead, it is fitted with a electrical speed sensor.  These sensors can play up.  Check all connections are firm and clean at the transfer box and at the rear of the Speedo head.  Do check that the mechanicals (transfer box end), to see that they are turning to activate the Speedo sensor.

Re: Faulty Speedo

I got my speedo cable off a 1996 461 that rolled, so it seems the 461's came with cample or electric, either way, it shouldn't be to expensive, I hope.
