Eye Candy with eye watering pricetag
Recent posting on the South African Benz mbsa4x4.co.za web, shows a special vehicle spotted in Windhoek Namibia.
Apparently destined to be displayed in Du Bai in the near future. Portal axles, adjustable shocks, tire inflation/deflation on the go. reputed to have an eye watering price tag around $1m.
Enjoy!
Its got 6 wheels! not 2 or 4 but 6............ oh man I want one!

Proper beast
But is it a 6x6 or a 6x4? Also not sure about the bracket supporting the lower swivel on the front hub. It looks a bit vulnerable to me, as does the rigid brake pipe to the front caliper. (See image 6, I think). Still, somebody has plenty of money to throw around and it certainly looks the business.
I think it is 6x4... at least I don't see a propshaft between these two axles
Proper 6x6 G-Wagens have a special second axle differential, with a short propshaft to feed power into the third one
I concur, it is a 6X4, shame.
Well spotted, don't want it anymore, :)
Found some more picturs of same but that particular site is claiming this to be an AMG G63, 6X6!!
Some interesting pictures of a Rally G:

6x4? then I shall cancell my order! :)

Actually, I think it may well be a 6x6. In the first photo Jesus posted, you can just see what looks like a U/J flange and the shaft, most of which is hidden by the radius arm. In a subsequent photo, depicting the number 2 diff (forward rear), it clearly has some additional castings which make me think there is a step-drive with drive-thru shaft to the rear axle.
I wonder if it's a spin-off from the Australian mil spec 6x6. They certainly did some interesting prototypes for that project, so it would make sense, if only to help amortise the development costs.
Well done Quercus,
I have, had another look at 200% magnification of the photo and it is just possible to notice a prop.shaft; meaning it is a 6X6 and not a 6X4 as I concurred with one other. - Sorry folks.
I have been in touch with customer services and a reply from Maastricht claims M/Benz have never produced a 6X6 only 4X4 chassis in the G-Class. They have suggested that, this could be an outside development. I do not know who this might be the developers.
Cheers,
Are you having then Mark ?? You were first :-)
Hi Rakesh I think MB are telling you porky pies about not making a 6x6 chassis for the G Wagon,,,,,,,,
I think what M/Benz say is that, they have no 6X6 on their assembly lines, these examples are modified by their subcontractors and largely for the Australian contract; I am trying to find out more info. on this.
Cheers,
Hi Rakesh
MB definetly manufacture (via Magna-Steyr) the G Wagon 6x6 chassis and cab for the Australian Defence Force which is then imported by by MB Australia. The sub-contractor for the mission specific modules which are then mounted to the MB platforms are GH Varley an Australian coach building company. The other sub-contractor is Haulmark who supply all the trailers.
Here is the Australian Defence Dept mission statement for Project Land 121 (Phase 3A) which explains who does what and the various mission system configurations of the G Wagon.

This is a classified document so don't go spreading it around the internet !
whispers. excellent link, shhhhush! ;)
Hello Bigblock,
Thank you for that posting, in fact it is only yesterday I did noticed that very same document on the internet.
As a result to finding that, on the internet, I was going to post another link on the Australian G-Wagen. I have contacted both the Conversion company and the Ministry address found from your posted document, asking them to give us more info in particular the drive system.
Let me make this clear, my enquiry resulted from my own find of the same document and not taken from your posting on this forum, which I am noticing now.

The PDF file can be found under the Project LAND 121 (Overlander) Phase 3A.
enjoy,
Hi Rakesh
I was actually joking about it being a classified document. I am not really a spy.
Hi Bigblock,
I never said you were, but I also didn't think anything of it. I must admit I was puzzled, I suppose taken in - naughty boy.
In amongst some gallery photo there were some lovely, high quality pictures of the Australian G-Wagen. I can not seem to find those.
When I find them again, I'll post them up for the forum.
Cheers,
Hi Rakesh
After reviewing all the evidence do you now agree that MB do actually make a 6x6 derivative of the G Wagon or are you still investigating ?
Dare I suggest that Daimler Benz don't always know precisely what the boys at Steyr are getting up to. The Austrians are a bunch of Mountain Bandits (in the nicest possible way, of course) and I used to pick up on the odd tale or two when I was with Automotive Technik.
Have a close look at the picture attached and you can see the small prop shaft, the same as the pic 5
Of course 6x6 versions are made at the Graz factory by Magna Steyr. One 6x6 pre-production example was standing there at the very visitor's hall of the site of Mercedes-Benz Consult Graz when the GWOA visited the factory in March 2008:
