Exhaust system for G280GE 1988
Hello fellow members- I am told that apparently the middle box on my G needs replacing and whilst at it I might as well change the back one as well.
Having tried MB who can not supply I then tried several other suppliers including one found on some GWOA correspondence (they quoted over £1200), here is the question; does anyone there know of a supplier who may be able to assist at a reasonable price less than one would pay for a small holiday home in Greece? I would be grateful.
The other question is, as I am not sure if the engine in my G is a low or high pressure one (it looks as thought it may have been changed from the original at sometime or rather; would the type of engine dictate the type of exhaust?
Any comments, suggestions and advice would be great. Henry
Hi Henry
A full stainless system is often the way to go on these older vehicles and will last forever.
A good bespoke system should cost around £400 - £500 fitted.
Who told you that MB don't have the boxes available anymore?
From what i can see they are both available from MB Germany and although not too cheap the should not be anywhere near what you have been quoted from the other supplier and carry a 2 year warranty, they should however last 10-12 years i normal use.
If you drop me your email address on a PM then i will send back some MB EPC pictures and an estimate if you like.
As for the engine number and type, i will PM you the engine number that it left the factory with so you can check against your log book, i will also dig out the location on the block of the number so that you can find the current one
Cheers
Gav
Watch out for shark on this forum !! you should get 3 for that amount !
Few forum user deserting the forum after been offered all kind of services via PM at Mac Laren prices !!!
Gav will help you.
MB original equipement exhausts seem to last and last and are not as expensive as expected.
When I came up for a replacement 230 GES I investigated the stainless route but was told they can crack if knocked hard offroad while a mild steel one will just bend. As the SS quotes were more expensive I went for the MB part.
With the vin number you should get the right part as well.
300GD exhausts are easy aftermarket item. When I tried to get a 280GE (thinking it would be bigger and hence less back pressure for my turbo) I found them near impossible to find in UK in normal places. If MB's prices are fair then they do build them well and they will last 10 years or so.
I did find for 280GE;
http://www.onlineautomotive.co.uk/Products.aspx?ProductID=380601&VehicleID=287085
280GE system part numbers
Front pipe MER2060
Tail pipe MER6058
Silencer MER6097
365E = stainless 280GE mid silencer but front looks wrong?
I got a quote to make a 57mm stainless SWB system for £466 inc VAT from Turriff Tyres who are the local
Powerflow dealer... seems a few shooting estates up in NE Scotland have G's for estates so they know the requirements well. So go look for a Powerflow dealer - but search for feedback as it is a franchise.

Hi Gav- as for MB yesterday I spoke to their Brentford office (parts) and I told them that I wanted to price a system and they checked both in the UK and Germany and told me that they did not have one. Go figure.
All the best- Henry
