I was wondering if anybody has had any experience in sourcing good ex-military G Wagens from mainland europe? I was thinking along the lines of a 250 or 290GD in either SWB, LWB, Van or Wolf format (condition more important than spec). Any sources appreciated and i'd be glad to hear from anybody who has had experience with military G's.

Also, i'd be interested to know how easy (or difficult!) it is to re-register a european G for use in the UK.

Thanks in advance.

You can source ex-military G-Wagens in this country, from details I have seen they are well maintained, but on the expensive side.
Upon sale they do service the vehicle and may even spray to your colour choice (subject to confirmation).

Try the address below. there are 30 for sale.

Re: Ex-Military G's

 hi hvdevs,

if the car is more than 10 years old and from Europe, you can register it with an MOT, eu reg certificate and bill of sale without too much ado. it is all pretty straight forward and just requires a bit of time and patience. i've no personal experience of buying an ex-military one, however have bought in germany and imported. bascially, you'll have to give yourself a weekend with two weekdays, search the web for all the dealers (in germany they have several ex-mod type dealers like we have over here), get on a ryan air flight (dare i mention it!.........but it is the cheapest way to get there), rent a car and have a drive around to the test drive the gs you've shortlisted. once you've found the one for you, negotiate a deal and get the dealer to supply you with export trade plates (they'll cost about euro 150 or so - you can do it yourself for about euro125, but it involves waiting for about 5 hours in a german dvla centre and trying to find out what is going on!). with these, you'll be able to travel anywhere in europe for 3 days with 3-rd party insurance cover. when you get back to the uk, take it straight to the mot station. once you get it insured on the chassis plate at first, take the insurance and MOT certificate, the german registration, a german bill of sale and fill out all the forms that you get from the dvla if you ask them for an car import pack, to a dvla station. they take all the stuff off you and about 10 days later you get a v5 and a registration plate certificate. take these down to a reg plate guy and he'll make up the new plates. tell your insurance the new plate number and away you drive your military g all legalised here in the uk. it is really that simple.......and the german miliary gs are sooo much cheaper than what we can get over here: it is worth the hassle.

good luck/ph

Re: Ex-Military G's

 hi fixwin,

driving on the left requirement, i.e. steering wheel, is not mandatory: in so far as driving on UK roads, it is a question of getting used to it. i, nor my wife, have found it a problem. the speedo does not have to be in mph by the way: this is not an MOT requirement. If the vehicle being imported is less than 10 years old, it has to be changed. about the lights, sorry forgot to mention: the fog and reversing lights have to be switched around. the front lights can be taped off for the MOT and driving AT ALL TIMES thereafter. Again, if the car is less than 10 years old, they will have to be changed for UK spec ones, or - instead of getting the usual UK-ripoff-pricing on lights- a possible way around the lights is to buy US-spec ones (for about 1/2 the price) as they are straight-ahead spread beams and should be OK for UK use: I haven't tried this but know that on american cars you don't need to have their headlights changed, even if they are less than 10 years old, according to the SVA test, as they are not directional (i.e. point to any side in particular). however, to come to the original thread's questions, for european military gs - the great majority of which are well over 10 years old - you shouldn't have great difficulties registering the car over here.

hope that helps/ph

Re: Ex-Military G's

Hi,

German language skills and mechanical know-how are helpful if not essential; the cars had a tough life especially if they have been used outside Germany.

Many Gs but also Pinzgauers and more exotic vehicles can be found under:  http://www.military-vehicles.de/fahrzeuge.html

Have fun.
