I am thinking of embarking on building a 460 with good performance as an all purpose dailly use vehicle.  I am becoming confused by all the engine options.  Ideally I would like 150+BHP diesel and a 5 speed auto box for fuel economy (this is maybe ambitious but i would like to hear all the options..  I am not a merc expert so dont know all the engine derivatives.  Am i restricted to older  engines due to electrical constraints or can i put a more modern engine in?

Has anyone succesfully converted a 460 to a good TD engine?

What options are there?

PS i am looking for a good 460 LWB but not so good it should be ruined by putting a new engine in it.

Re: Engine transplant

My thoughts on your post....obtain a petrol 460 , manual if poss , buy an end of life musso turbo , this will need a gearbox T1 van 5 spd best , iveco 2.8 van intercooler...this will give you 125bhp from a mb 602 5cyl with no electric pump issues...there are several of these conversions locally...cost under £2000 . Fitting a 6 cyl auto [ 606 engine , 177 bhp] is a labour of love see extended posts on various forums . I believe the G people at Malvern are doing this for customers , would be £6000 ++ Good Luck !!

Re: Engine transplant

My G300D had Om617 (100+ hp) 3TD. It dead few weeks ago. So I`m searching for OM605 2.5TD 150hp.
If needed more hp, then you can go with OM606 3TD 170hp, even 220hp version I heard. You can chip it and tune it, possible 450+hp :) I`m building offroud trophy car, so OM605 is best for my project, CDI has other prices, more electronics etc.
About economy, don`t buy automatic gear box, and maybe don`t buy G, because its heavy car and not best airodinamic. Don`t know what economy are you eaming with this car.
