Greetings, People,

I am looking to buy a diesel powered long-wheeled-base G Wagen but would like to replace the engine with a perkier, Mercedes diesel powerplant.

I am wondering if the diesel engine's, taken from the following vehicles, would be vialbe considering I will be purchasing a 'right hand' model: E 320TD, Sprinter and the M Series.

Maybe the original unit can be pepped-up?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated - thank you.

M. Wittmann.

Re: Engine Replacement

It really depends on how much cash you are prepared to spend.

It is common over here to buy a W463 G300 Diesel Auto and fit either a OM603D30LA from a W124 E300 Turbodiesel or a OM606DE30LA from a W210 E300 Turbodiesel. The issue is whether this can easily be done to a RHD G-Wagen!

Re: Engine Replacement

Greetings, Mortinson,

Thank you for your reply and advice.

I am not yet familiar with the serial numbers you have mentioned though I hope to become acquainted in the not too distant!

I have read that the steering-box on the right hand models fouls the Turbo unit on the diesel engines. I hope to get round this.

Regards,

Michael.

P.S. Nice G.

Re: Engine Replacement

Hi Michael,

Morti is right, it all depends how much you want to splash with the cash.

However, something to bear in mind: the 320 engines you refer to are CDI models and have a lot of ancilliary electronics to go with them (and for that matter the gearboxes). The 300TD engine (i.e. 606 engine range/3litre straight six turbo diesel/old tech) is an easier deal as it was actually fitted in production to G-Wagens, albeit only in LHD form. This engine is a very capable unit and people have been known to 'upgrade' these to over 350bhp AND run them for 180k miles in E-class saloons. As it sounds like you are quite handy with a spanner, you might wish to go down this much simpler route......also, as it is a known G-wagen engine, if you'd ever want to sell it, people would be queuing up to buy it as opposed to running away.

Good luck/ph
