Always something to do - been advised by MB that my engine and gearbox mountings are shot (they were doing a 'visual check' as I thought my steering damper had gone whilst under warranty - they feel not the case...). Anyway, any advice for the amateur mechanic, things to watch out for, possible alternative suppliers (costs?) etc.

Cheers, Stewart

Starting with the engine mounts, check to see if the rubber of the engine mounts is bonded onto the metal part of the mounting, secondly, the metal sleeve that  is in the middle the mounting, is the sleeve firmly bonded to the rubber or separated?  The rubber can become soft if contaminated with oil or oil soaked.

You are looking for similar conditions for the gearbox mounting.

Checking the steering damper is easy, have one side disconnected and test the pressure. to be under pressure pushing outwardly.

Can't you check the engine mounts by rocking engine  side to side holding onto cam cover and seeing if it is really bad?

Right, diagnosis: There is engine movement (rocking) so would concur mountings aren't as should be... Have attached a number of pics and technicians report. Any comments welcome. Sorry about state of gearbox mounting, but reckon this could be the first to be replaced... advice on doing this, i.e. if (?!?) can underdo bolts, basically case of raise by jack (piece of wood) and replace? Traps/pitfalls?

Cheers,

Stewart

Sounds as though you have the jist of it any way. Just make sure it is a strudy piece of wood and mounted to be stable.

Rear Shockers Broken in half!!! Cool

Engine Mounts are as follows for your G...

LEFT A460 240 67 18 £102+vat

The old T1 van mounts are similar but different and these are G specific.

Thanks for comments! Gav, already have shockers on order and will place order for gearbox mounting (as cheapest to start with). Missus about to purchase our first horse (possibly 2!?!) so I see a very definite pinch on budget - just keeping my head down and not mentioning any of these costs as otherwise they'll get swallowed by the nags fund - more worried I'll be forced to release my truck so at minimum have got to keep it on the road to prove of value... 100+ quid a mounting, hmmmm, tricky.
