E300 TD as a donor?
With the E300Turbo diesel now being so cheep and spares so abundant,I see this as being a viable donor for a Diesel conversion.
I had 2 of these E class' a few years back and they were just so good..
I did a 5 cyl diesel auto conversion on a 460 10 years ago and it went straight in and being a car engine wasnt as slow as it sounds.
Will the 300 td fit on the petrol or diesel 463 G wagon gbox?Anyone done it?
Hi Andy
any Mercedes engine that has electronic fuel management like the OM 606 will not be cost effective to instal in a 463 unless the host vehicle allround condition will stand the cost of the looms and ecu's required along with the exhaust modification. throttle linkeage. rad cowl etc...more costly if you try to do the mod to a GE like tank. engine heaters. engine cut off / vacuum ignition switch.
Lots of discussions about this elsewhere, some quite recent.
I test drove a SWB 463 with the 603(?) TD engine and wasn't overly impressed. It was OK performance wise and kept up with traffic up hills which the petrol (500 aside) and n/a diesels struggle with. Off the mark it wasn't noticeably quicker than my 280. The guy said it went in without too many troubles but not a straight swap by any means and that he returned a realistic 22/23mpg.
I think you'd have to be using the G a lot to get the benefit in mpg and performance considering the hassle involved.
I've heard of this conversion being done and using the fuel pump from the 603. This avoids having to use the ecu and sorting out the electronics. No personal experience
hi andyc. I agree with you - we also (still) have an old 300 TD e-class and it is a cracking engine/car......in fact, we liked it so much that we've just bought a G300 TD from Germany (as opposed to a G290 TD which we were actually looking for, but the 300 is just a lot more responsive to drive and just as reliable): expensive to buy over there by the way, but I think its an easier route and probably about as much given the very high prices of the Gs over here and trying to do the whole conversion (apparently there are issues with the exhaust cowling having to be altered to fit into a RHD car). Surprised the the mpg is only 22-23, as (I'm hoping) to get more into the high 20s according to the feedback that I got from others. Good luck/ph
Hi Andy
We looked at all the practical ways of uprating the engine in the 463 using existing turbo engines not limited to MB but Jap as well...hence the decision to buy the MB manufactured OM 603A kit from USA (60% cheaper than from MB Germany)...the engineer that installed it has spent the last ten weeks putting an OM 606 turbo into a SWB 460 and has finally resorted to fitting the mechanical pump from an OM 603 to get any sort of performance/reliability..the early "sprinter" engine with turbo works very well in a 463 ( one in Dublin) but at the expense of fitting a dome in the bonnet and still 23/24 mph ..We get 26/28 mpg with the OM603A conversion
EVERYTHING is explained across the pond at pointed three. search for my posts, under hus55. every question is answered there. i am probably the first guy here to do the conversion with hickups in the beginning ofcourse.
it was running on 35x2.50x15 cooper stt's and would spin the tires in 1st 2nd and 3rd gear !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
g wizz, peter perfect was here in cyprus, he knows....he saw it in the flesh.
i have just been out in my 2nd 606a conversion, this time a lhd 79 model swb. you cannot help grinning at the way it goes.
and just swapping the 606a pump with 603 is half the story.....been there, seen it,done it
as mentioned, i am 100% behind the conversion. the only downside being high labour costs in the uk !!
mick the digger has most finished the same conversion.
are there any other threads elsewhere about this?
