 Hello
Trying to fix a snag.
My drivers door latch. When operated from the outside only, sometimes does not fully release the u shaped latch that locates over the metal bar on the receiver. Mostly just opens 1/4 inch and then its stuck. When I test everything with the door open using the internal handle the thing springs correctly. When I test using the outside handle 9 out of ten times it will not spring.
Anybody know how to fix and what part I need?
Thanks
Vic b

Re: Drivers door latch sometimes will not open

Hi Vic

From memory there are three small springs on the lock mech that operate the different functions.

The inner and outer handles operate on different sections of the lock so one will work and the other not.

The last time i had this it was pure frustration that was opening the one out of ten!!!

Either one end of the spring has come off / it has snapped / it has come off altogether.

It usually ends up in the bottom of the door.

I think they are all available from MB and are only a few pence.

The hardest part is finding what is missing when it has fallen out and knowing what it connects to.

The easiest way is to look at the other side lock which should be its mirror image and figure out whats wrong.

A pain taking two locks out but better than buying a new mech

I guess the lock could be worn or broken but this is not usual in my experience.

Hope this helps

Gav

Re: Drivers door latch sometimes will not open

Hi Vic B
there is a star headed screw behind the button only accessible by removing the door card and the bolts that hold the handle onto the door ( one inside the door and the other by the catch) the .screw is locked into position with a dab of locktite when installed at the factory ...age dictates that this will decay and allow the screw to move..try adjusting this before getting into the heavy engineering---like springs.....

i had the same problem last year
in my case, it turned out to be part of the L-shaped plate (inside the handle/button) that strikes the release latch had been bent
pulling it back to its original shaped only held for 2-3 successful attempts, it went back to its bent position afterwards
i ended up putting some additional weld points to strengthen the plate

Re: Drivers door latch sometimes will not open

How nice when all works well.
It was a small adjustable screw not applying enough pressure to the mechanism. No need to remove the lock just the handle and lenghten the screw. Just for you to know this was on a central locking system so I have no idea if they are all the same.
Thanks for all the help.
