Dohhh!!!! 460 300gd rear spring mount.
Ladies and Gents ,
Rough track loud knock from the N/S/R further investigation reveals the upper shock mount has sheared from the chassis due to corrosion . Bugger.
Are the mounts availible as a weld on part or is it a home repair from scratch ?
Any advice welcome
Pretty sure you can get them as a dealer part.
Convincing someone in the parts dept. To actually search for it maybe a challenge. Maybe someone on here can access the EPC. I’m on my work laptop so can’t access it at the moment.
have had to have mine welded up for a 2nd time this week following a we spot of off roading, photo to follow
The part you want is known as Console. It is listed and illustrated on the EPC.
For reference chassis number of a W460.322, 300GD the part number is as follows:
Console (support for rear spring): A 460 320 20 78 - (not handed) but should you find that the shock absorber console are corroded I have provided reference number to those as well,
Console for right hand Shock absorber: A 460 320 17 78
Console for left hand Shock absorber: A 460 320 16 78
Note: Mercedes make distinction of left and right side, viewing the vehicle from the rear end, looking forwards.
Please provide your dealer with your chassis number to ensure for a correct delivery of parts.
They certainly are for a 93 reg 463 as I had to get mine done two weeks after I bought as I snapped one. And they were a weld-on part. Think it cost £371 and a few pence to have them done but if you could do it yourself would be considerably less. Can dig out the invoice if you'd like the price of the mounts?
If this is what you are looking for?
mine wasn't split all the way through but the same side, so it could be a manufacturing fault?
I was told it was a G Wagen weak spot as it is like an upturned teacup that just fills with mud etc.
Made one hell of a noise when it went!!!!
These do go rusty and break off, fairly sure they are available as parts from the dealer. Being particularly mean, but good with the welder, I welded mine up on my old 463 when it broke!
That's not mean, that's resourceful.

Does the body need to come off?
Just yesterday I had the rear shock absorber mounts done on my 1988 SWB 460.
Gordon of G-Restorations supplied the new mounts.
D.J. MacPherson of Loch Shiel Garage, Acharacle cut off the old mounts (there was not much more than dirty rust left) and made a beautiful job of welding on the new ones.
No. The body does not need to come off.
However, it does want someone who knows what they're at to do it.
Good luck with getting yours done, Alan.
All the best, Nick.
I did mine without lifting the body
the welding is the easy part, cutting the old mounts off is the hard bit. I trimmed the spring mount off and then decided to replace the front tubes. They were not in bad shape but why struggle. It would of been so much easier to cut the tube and remove the lot in the first place.
I tig welded mine on to make it neat and super strong but also mig welded my friends vehicle like original and also did not have to lift body
Its an easy ish job but make sure you have a knowledgable fabricator or welder as i have seen some right messes even with a body off repair. I am sure it will be fine but to have it looking neat and like original is my main goal and also stronger than new
I replaced the tubes that supports the spring and damper mount as well just because i had some tube machined the exact size. Just luck
I have some tube left if anyone needs any. Its cds tube which is the strongest in the business and welds perfectly too
