Cos he barely looked at the VAn, the lights worked, the brakes were excellent,(& always are) regarding the rest. pah! he hardly looked at her, this when up on the lift.
I noted this as I had the Van down exactly one week after the Galaxy, both Friday Afternoon bookings, the Galaxy  got a very very very very through examination.
Mind you the handbrake had just squeaked in at 17% on the second go-around (& 16% is required)
Both vehicles are 1998 too.
just thinking that perhaps the different vehicle gets a touch more interest & therefore sympathy than the "bog standard" stuff.
Cheers

They just don't know what to look for or where to look.
I have had two G's in recently that had just passed the NCT (Irish MOT).
One had broken rear spring mountings.
The other had a broken rear spring, rotten rear brake lines and a seized brake drum.
A third one had two pages of fails but they still missed both broken rear springs.

And the Irish NCT is tougher than the UK MOT...

Top priority seems to be the cleanliness of the car and the attitude of the owner.
Eddie.

Ah well.................
I always make sure that any of my vehicles are spotlessly clean for the test, &since i only wash them for the MOT I could not begrudge spending a while getting it right,  once a year.
PS

Sniff!, I do hope you are not lumping us in the North in with the English regarding the MOT test, I suspect your lot talked to our lot when establishing their test regime, if it is stiff.
PPs
Fixwin was just telling me the same, i.e. the MOT guys do not understand the "G" therefore (mostly) try to avoid the possibility of looking foolish.

Re: Do "G" Wagens get an easier MOT?

I would say no.

I think it is just the luck of the draw in the NI test centres.  My G failed on hand brake balance and having tinted windows on the front.  I was there for about 30 mins.  Although 2 of those minutes was taken up by the guy looking for the exhaust!! The guy was under it with a crow bar and gave it a very very in depth inspection.  Although the brake testing machines failed to identify the slightly warped disks and failed steering damper.  Just because its a G doesnt mean the machines stop working!

I took my 500BHP classic impreza to the test centre to get a list of the things i would need done to pass...  and it passed.  Shock!!  I was there 10mins.  It had no fog light,  The speedo reads in KM, it spits out unburnt super unleaded on idle and should have failed emissions the guy just said "it was close enough", it has a Blitz Nur spec R exhaust which, well, isn't quiet around 115db that has both cats removed and should be bunged for MOT, blacked out windows and faulty windscreen washers.

I think the NI system is terrible as without driving a car how do you really know how it behaves on the road!

In the mainland it should be the same as any car as the garage you get your MOT done at is presumably the one that maintains your car so should know a your G inside out!!

So.. NO!!.

How much is Irish MOT test? Over here they vary from £30 to £55 with some offering free restest, I always insist they use the old brake meter to test the brakes on 463 as I reckon  rolling road break test very bad for transfer box, also test a lot easier! Got 80 % on my hand brake , including nasty smell of burnt rubber. Unfortunately did notice broken springs but not loose Schock Asorbers on the back.

 Marcus.
No offence intended to anyone.
Unfortunately our crowd did not talk to yours.
Instead they got the Swiss in (SGS) for the first contract 3 or 4 years ago.
When their contract expired (and all the gadgets were paid for) the powers that be gave the contract to a Spanish company.
The Spanish are in less than a year, but they are really tough.

I wonder did we piss them off trying to buy up the Costa's...

Cannot comment on Ireland but over here I think it is very tester-specific.
I've been using the same guys for a few years now, and got friendly enough to attend and understand what they do, the test is very thorough, but as you say misses a lot of parts that only show up when the vehicle is in motion.
As for brake test, the first few times they did it with a portable "G" braking force thingy (never a problem), but last time he put it on the rollers and it showed up some differences left/right rear and with the handbrake, so I did a rear drum service ("auto" adjusters were seized up, replaced) and it passed. He couldn't get it off without the difflock, so make sure your difflocks work before it goes on!

Interesting post.... my first G MOT flew through, the second they failed it on immissions and registration plate (though they passed it the year before) and the last MOT walked it in about 25 mins.
