Hi Guys
This Sunday was the first time out off roading for my G and I was very disappointed with its performance. My other off roader is a Sportrak with open diffs and IFS and it would run rings around my G. I can forgive it getting beached in the ruts because of the small 205-16 tyres  but on the muddy hills I got left be my sons Suzuki Sj on the same size rubber. The only thing I can think of is the weight of the thing was stopping it. has anyone got any tips on off roading in a G that would be different to my Sportrak

Did you make use of the low ratio gear selection and use front or rear diff locks?

Different drive techniques might apply in between both vehicles. I have not driven a sportrak.

You probably have to hone your techniques of using momentum, speed and power in combination of being in low ratio and knowing when to activate rear and front diff locks.

Sportrak probably half the weight, also what sort of tyres are you running some tall aggressive tyres 235/85 16 would probably help, looks a nice G from picture, trash the Sportrak instead

Re: disappointed in my G

All sorts of things can make a difference off road.  I have a LR 110, and have had several 90's, my last being a soft top, stripped out of all but necessary things, so nice and light.

My 110 on the other hand, has a galvanised military spec HD chassis, full station wagon and external cage, so weight about as much as the moon; on steep hillclimbs (there's a nice cross axley one near me), my 110 with lockers engaged (i have ARB front & rear) was floundering on MT's,  drove the same lane in the 90, no lockers, same tyres, and it walked up there without a sniff.

But my 110 handles much better at speed.

What tyre pressures did you have in the G?  you say you were on 205's compared to what on the LR? probably at ;east a 235 or 7.50... that's an extre inch of gound clearance.

The suzuki has much smaller axle casings than a G (or a LR... several of my mates used to lane them), so even on 205's you've gained some clearance due to the smaller axles.

Were you in front of the LR? did it pull you out from behind?  then the fortrac went through.... maybe because you'd cleared the way with the G moving the dirt out of the way.

All manner of things can make a difference, even just , as mentioned, the momentum or the wheel positioning. Trouible is, it's hard to explain in on a forum... you need to get out there and practice it.

You don't say in your post if you had four wheel drive engaged and the diffs locked, nor do you say if your tyres are m/t, a/t or bald as a coot !

Assuming you have decent tyres and everything is working properly then I would be very surprised if a Sportrak kicked your ass in a G.

Re: disappointed in my G

Thanks for the reply's guys smiley I will try and answer a few of your questions

My G Wagon was in low ratio with both front and rear difflocks engaged when needed, tyres are half worn MTs at 25psi

I think Jims right in that the diffs did keep grounding because of the size of the things but I did say that it was doing the same on the flat muddy hills, in the spot where the pic was taken the suzuki had gone before me with no trouble the landrover behind but that thing is a Whitbread challenge truck on 35s so its not getting stuck in a bit of mud

I have no intention of trashing the G Wagon I have saved it from being a chicken shed for five years and its now MOTed, taxed and insured I was just expecting it to perform better off road as its the slowest thing I have ever driven on the road laugh

As for my Sportrak it wasn't there but over the last 18months its been to that same pay and play every month so I know what it can and can't do and it would of done a lot more the the G did. It was a Suzuki SJ that kicked my ass angry

So to make it better off road I think it needs to loose some weight,  bigger tyres (maybe 33s) more power and me learning to drive it

It seems like a lot of people liked it as it got car of the month on the pay and play sites facebook page.

Re: disappointed in my G

Half worn MT's probably as bad as fully worn MT in that mud, diff locks not much use if no grip to be had. Weight loss hard to get around unless you want to loose rear seat, spare wheel etc.

Think someone worked out to have the same power to weight ratio of a 1.3 SJ Suzuki you need a V8G.

Your probably right about the tyres but its the same for everyone unless they have new ones

The weight loss I am really going to struggle with as the rear seat and spare are out already

Power to weight, Sounds about right, My G Wagon feels as though its got at least 20bhp so I need to do some work on that laugh

Let some air out of the tyres, cheapest way to get an improvement.

Bigger tyres and air down, better still.

Re: disappointed in my G

locking diffs where theres no traction simply digs you further in the mud !  I dont understand why people think diff locks will  save you off road.. diff locks are better suited when one wheel is off the ground and momentum is lost.

G = heavy . you must alter your driving technique...muddy passes sometimes need lots of welly...

Keep experimenting mate. and read more on G driving techniques. youtube is also a good source.

dont give up on the G. its a great weapon off road.

Re: disappointed in my G

Thanks Hus yeswhat your saying about the difflocks sounds just like what was happening and on the flat bits I think it might just be a lack of available welly plus the weight that stopped it. In my Sportrak I can take a run up nail it and momentum will take me through But my G is that slow its a case of plodding up and hoping laugh

I won't be giving up on it anytime soon but I think it might need a better engine
