Diesel transplant
Hey, what would be the best way to go about placing in a turbo-diesel unit in a LHD LWB 2002 G500 5p automatic.?
-It currently has the factory v8 petrol in it.
-I do have 1 proxy in frankfurt if anything needs to come from germany.
I am in the states.
My answer is not based not upon experience but on logic. Look at it in this way, Mercedes have themselves fitted the engine you have asked of; so if they can, there is no reason to suppose you cannot.
You need to bear in mind engines fitted to the G-Wagens are lower in compression compared to those employed in the saloons. This is to adapt to better off-roading capabilities; the torque band is different. If that is not of issue, there is nothing to stop you.
You will have to check if the bell housing can mated up, consider the starter position and more importantly, is the ECU connected to the gearbox, otherwise, the gear box will need to be from the same donor vehicle otherwise your guys will need knowledge to over ride this part.
I would have thought it simpler to sell the V8 and buy the Diesel.
Only one thing to say........ BURN HIM!!!!! SACRILGIOUS!!!!!!!!!! Taking out a 500 and replace it with , with, with...... OMG I can't bring myself to say it! :)
Spider1V
You would really want to have to it to suceed and still big bucks and endless headaches to get engine/box ecu to talk to the 463...even G-Wagen centre in holland has struggled with this one....BUY a 463 diesel plse
Why?
I don't want to be rude - but if you can afford to buy a G500 in the first place, then the fuel costs in the grand scheme of things are trivial compared to what you are proposing (especially in the USA) - unless you are doing huge milelage; and honestly if you are and can't afford to run it, then you should just buy something else.
A conversion will cost you way more that you will ever save. Depreciation will be the first thing - Resale value of the 500 will be trashed, secondly, putting even a non CDI like a 606 in wil cost several thousand to do properly.
Of course its possible that you have another reason for swapping a diesel in?
Liquid pertoleum gas [a mix of propane and butane] is a route taken in Europe because it is taxed at a much lower rate than petrol, is that an option for you over there. Tanks can be fitted where the jump seats go and systems are readily integrated into electronic fuel management systems. Gallon for gallon you will get slightly fewer miles but again the plus for us no change in performance.
Good luck
Maybe so, but for simplicity LPG will save you a third over petrol [gasoline] and can be easily removed too for originality.
would a e320 e-class cdi engine be compatible? maybe a 2005 ish
