What fuel consumption does a standard 463 300d manuel give? I was sure I got around 22mpg with my original OM603 engine, and yesterday I discovered I only got 16mpg on my last tank with the OM606!!! I must admit that I did do a few hours low range work, and I towed a tractor on trailer for about  60 miles, and the rest of the miles were all school run, start up, drive 3 miles and switch off again. Oh, and because it is new and there, my right foot tends to be a bit heavy.

This still feels a bit much. I will be taking the G on a French tour, starting Easter, planning to do about 3000 miles, so I hope I get a bit more, and I will be able to get a more accurate figure then.

Re: Diesel consumption

I would have thought the norm would be between 14-18 mpg, however, I have heard of some claims to be as high as 20-22 mpg.  Why some claims are different from what one expects, is probably due to the each vehicle being different despite the almost same machining tolerances each goes through.

There are other factors involved, i.e. type of tyres and pressures they run on.

I suggest the use of Diesel fuel additives, which help keeping the injectors clean for a injector pattern, maximising the burn pattern, hence fuel economy.  Use this at least twice a year adding the contents of a complete bottle to a full tank; over the time of using your fuel up, the injectors get cleaned.

You can ask, those equipped garages to purge your system with a concentrated cleaner initially and then adapt the cleaning, twice a year suggested.

Check out for any brake bind that will cause higher fuel fuel consumption.

Cheers,

Re: Diesel consumption

rakesh, you are absolutely right about the injectors being cleaned on a regular basis.

i recently brought millers diesel injector cleaner here in cyprus and used it in  my astra 1.7td van. the bottle said that after 200 miles it was meant to make a difference, and IT DID !!! the black smoke under full throttle had gone and i was getting about 20 more miles with 17.5 i regularly put into it. power was much much better too. the bottle says add the measurement you squeeze into the top resevoir of the bottle to a full tank. i added it almost half a tank !!

the difference is amazing, i maybe would never had believed it if someone else had told me about thisadditive.

a proper deisel injector cleanup/maintenance should give even better results i guess, but at a premium of course.

i reckon leuu should be getting 18 around town and about 24-26 at a steady 56mph. [if however his tyres are 33's or similar, economy will plummet due to a constant heavy right foot !!

Re: Diesel consumption

You've answered your own question. Towing, low ratio, short journeys and a heavy right foot. You can't really do much more to get a lower MPG

My wheels are still a bit bigger than standard, 265/75 16, and I guess the right foot is the other problem. If you want to get your injectors clean, run it on bio for a while, amazing results!

Re: Diesel consumption

Not sure about the Bio - I am running my Saab on 50% Bio, and its been very slightly lower on mpg and recently starting to stutter, especially when cold and on acceleration.  I like the Bio idea, but do worry about the crap that goes in with it.  I am going to get some injector treatment to try that unless other ideas for a stuttering, hesitating on acceleration, diesel (2.2).   Oh, its also time to change the fuel filter which will have picked up all the tank gunk - maybe that's it.

My 230GE was getting 18mpg.  It needed a bit of a carb tune and was down from that a bit.

Re: Diesel consumption

Not to deviate too far from the 606 engine but I have to say that 18 from a 230 is pretty low. I used to get 23-25 in standard form and now with all the crap and 35" tyres it still does 20mpg potering around.

Re: Diesel consumption

I regularly got 25mpg from my 300gd 603 on the openroad. Towing a tractor for 60miles explains your low figure.
Can you post a picoftheengine bay?

Re: Diesel consumption

The figures are getting better, 21 towing a trailer loaded with camping gear doing a steady 70. I will try to do a run without a trailer or roofrack during next week, but I can't see it being possible to get more than 23-24.

I think the bottom line is that more power means more fuel.

Re: Diesel consumption

Welcome to my world......(for the moment)

A couple of tricks I have found that may help:

Lighten the Right foot
Make sure your tyes are at the correct pressure (note: bigger tyres or wider tyres has quite an affect on MPG with the G)
Lose roof rack when you can
Lose trailer when you can
Don't tow diggers/tractors /plant.

If you can bare the speed, try and coast behind big trucks/ fast moving transite vans.

hope that helps.....

Re: Diesel consumption

Hi Rakesh,
I have been reading some bloggs in a yachting site (practical boat owners ) where the contributors were saying that by adding (1:200) 2-stroke oil in the fuel , the engines run sweeter and with some improvement in the fuel consumption. I did try it in my boat which is fitted with a 50 hp Perkins diesel engine, for about 100 hours  and I was very pleased with the results, as far as good starting, no smoke and somewhat lower noise were concerned. Not too sure about improved fuel consumption though.
Some of the contributors were also reporting better running on their Land Rovers  and Mitsubishi engines.
Any views on this as an alternative to diesel treatment additives ????

REPLY TO THREAD NUMBER 3

Hello Leondias,

Two-stroke mixture is basically engine oil and fuel mixed together.  This is similar to adding an upper cylinder lubricant to your fuel for additional lubrication, to the valve stems and keep the valve seals in good order.

One of the trade names for an upper cylinder lubricant is Redex.  The bottle comes with a calibrated chamber as part of the neck of the additive bottle.  Keeping the bottle upright, undo the bottle cap and squeeze, gently, the sides of the bottle.  A small amount of additive will travel up an attached tube filling the chamber, which is calibrated to 5cc and 10cc mark.

Once you have dispensed the amount of additive you want, tip the contents into to you fuel tank.  You need 5cc, if you have half a tank full or 10cc for a full tank full.

You may add with it, if you wish fuel cleaning additives to keep the fuel injector tip clean.

There are other types of additives available, one is to keeping fuel clean of bacterial build up which could cause fuel blockages for vehicles stored away for long periods.

The fuel cleaners, I advocate its use at minimum every year or twice, a year.  The upper cylinder lubricant, every time you plan a long journey or trip especially or for local journeys a tank full of treatment, every three months.  The bacterial treatment is only necessary when not using the vehicle for some time and it has little fuel in it.  If there is more fuel in the tank bacteria does built up but not to the same concentrates as low amounts.

I hope this answers your question.

Cheers,

hi there.

i recently filled up my red cabrio and measured a trip to work and back,. 70 % motorway and about 30% around town. i covered 77 km's and consumed 8 litres of fuel. i worked it out to about 26mpg.

who needs a  G500 with all this torque and good mpg???!!!

Re: Diesel consumption

too right ph !

i think that if my cabrio never had a lift, 35 tires, 6.17 gearing it would manage over 30 mpg. i do plan on fitting 37 or 38 tires to bring the gearing down a bit more and even fit a 6 speed manual from 270 cdi like axel did. [ my doddles around corners in 3rd gear, i sometimes think its 2nd....!

i DONT need a v8 spider . the cost of fuel here is getting ridicuolus mate..
