The blower on my 300GD finally went today (horrible squeeling followed by bad burning smell and now totally dead).... which means  I'll have to have the dash out to replace it and just wondered what else I should look at while I'm there (I must admit I thought there was a post on this subject already, but I couldn't find it..).

thanks!

 Hello fcp,

Firstly, I congratulate you for having all relevant details ready for me to make my enquiries - well done, a GOLD star for you.
Thank you.

Although you have to gut much to get to your fan, it is not as much as the w463's.  Not, that is of help to you much.  If, I can find the work detail for you I will post that for you.

I can not offer much help at this point, only a small piece of advise or suggestion; that is if you can re-position or have made with suitable wire, extension of  the wiring of the rheostat.  This is difficult to get to for replacement when everything is in situ.  The point of the extension would be that you could renew this if necessary without dismantling a lot, should the need arise.

Hope you are aware the these motors can be fitted from other older vans. I will look up the link for this also.

Good luck,

Wiper bearings/spindles would be a good idea too.

check for water ingress .

and see if you can get hold some qaulity insualtion material to add to the firewall. it really cuts the noise down. check to see if the grommets on the firewall are in good order.

spindles would have been my first choice to check too....

Whilst it's a good oportunity to check the wiper spindles I wouldn't change them if not broken. It is slightly fiddly but straightforward enought to do the job without removing the dash, just the glove box.

Here's Dave Gomes's great tutorial on doing the blower

Definitely second about the resistor pack for the fan; that is what died on mine, well actually it was corrosion of the terminals; it still worked on max and min speed, just not middle speed. Not sure about moving them totally (you find them in the air stream inside the housing.. just waiting to get covered in salt!) as at the moment they are in a cooling air stream .. but try them when on and you will get an idea how hot they run and hence if you can move them. Thinking about it I'm sure it is only in hot climes you would need to worry about it.

There is a tip about using Van fans. I actually have a new MB on the shelf that was about £150... here are my copy of that posting;

“Well I can’t be to sure with the part numbers but I have fitted the Heater blower motor from a 207 d to five 460's and they all have been ok the only slight hitch is the balancing of the fan blade on a couple of jobs after fitting you could feel a slight vibration with the heater motor on full speed this is because the motor is supplied without the fan and the original fan and motor are balanced together so you have to use the old fan with the new motor which are not a balanced pair but even with them not being a balanced pair the vibration is not to bad and i think acceptable relative to the cost of a Mercedes OEM part” Terry "The MB part no for the van is A0008206242 according to Eurocarparts"

Re: Dashboard out to replace the blower, what else should I ...

Thanks to everyone for their replies - apologies for not having replied to PMs yet but have been out all day.

My plan at the moment is still to take the dash out.. I understand its a PITA and there are other ways to get to the fan throught he duct etc, but I have a feeling that there are several other things that are worth doing at the same time (couple of wiring things among others) and I'll also replace the heater core since they aren't super expensive and I know murphy's law will mean that only have just finished the blower and got the dash out and the core will gstart leaking...

Goo idea re. firewall noise insulation, though my truck has no carpet fitted so perhaps will be minor impact. Will check grommets for sure.
