Hi I have just restored my SWB 460 G.....

But now am thinking of cutting the roof off and making it into a pickup/ convertible. Thought it wold be a lot of fun for the summer in bright red on fat 33 inch BFG tyres!

Has anyone done this and knows the best way of doing it? It obviously a lot of work, but hey its now an open top off road beast!!

What height to make the cut, under the rear windows.
Whether to cut the roof over  the front cabin like a
and what to do with the tailgate
making a bikini top.

Ive seen a car called G-zilla that has done this but woudl be good to chat to someone first hand.

hope you can help or (talk me out of it!!)

thanks

Re: Convertible-isation!!

Hello  Stephen,

Good and bold move, I would like to suggest when you do the project, would you keep a photo dairy of the work and post it on the forum for the rest of us.  This would be useful materal to the G-Wagen magazine as well.

Other than that, the cut on the convertables is usually at the bottom panel; the line meeting the top panel.

Without making promises, if I can find any material or photos of convertables, I shall post this on your PM.

Cheers,

..... or you could look at the one already done that is for sale on the forum? But good luck with what ever you choose. BTW does one have to strengthen the underside like normal cars on a G?

Re: Convertible-isation!!

here is a pic of a conversion done by one of our members, no need for chassis reinforcement. Some use the rear door and c pillars to create an enclosed 2 seater, welding them directly on to the front section A-B pillar.
