 Hi all!

I've recently procured an 02 g500 left hand drive v8 petrol. I'm having issues with an SRS light.

A friend mechanic told me its because the steering wheel isn't the original and its an e-class wheel. But I'm thinking why should that matter if it was installed correctly.

Secondly the original in car phone has been removed, and some light research lead to maybe it causing the SRS light to come up.

So has anyone ever heard of the in car phone causing an SRS light error?

SRS has no connection to phone, but the phone does have a connection to the Airbag Control module linked to the emergency SOS system which is installed on some.

The SRS is probably to do with the sterring airbag module connection or with the passenger seat recognition pad, fitted in the seat cushion.

Check the connections on the seat control modules, the SRS connector for that seat will be yellow or  orange, they can come off if tugged when vacuumoning etc.

Failing the basic, you need to connect the vehicle to star diagnose or equivalent to read the fault code, the system may just need a reset following steering wheel replacement. A fault code would have been logged if the steering aitbag was removed with the key in ignition switch position 1 and also if the ignition switch was ever operated with the airbag off the steering wheel.

Hope this helps

 Much thanks for the insight.

Another Question:

Is there suppose to be any sort of noise alerting you that a safter harness must be equipped? In mine I can ride without the saftey harness and the car won't make any fuss(noise).

-Also in regard to that statement; while looking for a used G, I encountered 2 with the same issue.

- SRS Light
- in-car phone removed

So I was wondering if this was just coincidental and G's just have SRS issues(lol)?

Yes there is a seatbelt warning audible'beep' that should come on for a few seconds and then go out. That is a coding that can be changed in the Instrument Cluster(speedo clock), it can be turned on or off.  The star diagnose system is needed to carry out that configuration setting.

Mine might have been altered with. Could this also factor in the SRS light issue?

Th G's shouldn't have srs issues, but the passenger seat recognition pads and connections can be fauty most of the time.

The seat pads go faulty from wear and tear of sitting on the seat, the purpose of the seat pad is to allow you to use a MB approved child seat on the front seat and also has the WSS (weight sensing system) to set off a warning beep to alert passenger to put the seat belt on.

The child seat has transponders in the base and when fitted on the front seat the sensors in the seat pad detect the presense of the child seat and allows the passenger airbag on the dash to be de-activated, so it won't go off in the event of a collision.

The SRS is linked to the phone system  to call the emergency services automatically in the event of a crash. The crash signal is sent from the SRS control module to the front SAM(front fuse box) and rear SAM(rear fuse box)  to activate opening of door locks, hazard wanring lamps, fuel cut off and to activate the SOS signal to the emergency service, who can locate the vehicle via gps co-ordinates sent by by the phone.

The SOS function is not available in all countires and only supplied as special equipment.
