Can Anyone Help - Auto Transmission Pump Sought
Hi.
I'm hoping someone can help me finally bring a long-running saga with my G-Wagon to an end. In early Summer I experienced an unnerving clanking sound in the engine - diagnosed as damaged plates in the torque converter. This was duly replaced, but upon replacement the auto transmission would not work. Engine was removed twice. I have now been told that the (latest) problem is that I need a new/replacement oil pump for the auto-transmission, and this has been priced at more than €450. Any suggestions how I might escape such a hefty bill - if it's worth travelling to UK or elsewhere I'd consider it.
Contact me on gjacob@indigo.ie with any suggestions/advice. Many thanks.
How about obtaining a second hand auto box? I understand that the box is the same as that fitted to W123 cars, apart from the oil pan, which can obviously be swapped. Should be able to pick one up from a scrap yard.

There is a 5 cyl 300D engine and auto box for sale in Scot Ads today £200 complete. It is in Fraserburgh 01346 571258 if that is any use. If it is I may be able to help with some transport suggestions.

send me your chassis number - I may be able to help with a bargain price brand new pump - if everything is still in the vehicle that was in there when it left the factory...
passenger car auto trans can work but obviously hasn't got the strenghtened internals and different valving needed for off-roading. Or so I have been told...

Can someone come up with a definitive answer here?
I thought they were the exact same box apart from the oil pan. Just curious because the plan was to get a spare if and when the opportunity arose.
Cheers,

Russ,
Just by looking at the shift gate on your 280, you'll know that the box on the 280 is different from the passenger cars already in the sense that you can shift gears individually 1-2-3-4 which is not the case in the cars. Not sure if it's the same for other G's but I have complete EPC for entire Merc range so if someone want to send me their chassis number I can check this out very easily...
Private message sent, thanks in advance for the help.
