A beautiful G but..........
Went to look at a G today. You've probably all seen it on ebay, the 1987 300GD with STT turbo here:

Well, you know how some cars look far better in the pictures than they do in the flesh?....well, this wasn't one of them. It was achingly gorgeous in real life and in stunning condition. Solid as a rock, clean chassis beautifully painted and mint wheels and tyres. Interior was very good too and it drove very nicely indeed so, why didn't I buy it?
The engine was breathing really heavily. Removing the oil filler cap saw it chuffing crap out like a good un' so i figured I had four options:
1, Rebuild the engine, (probably very expensive)
2, Fit a replacement engine (probably very expensive and unknown what you're getting)
3, Live with it and just run it as is, (cheap option but would I ever trust it on a run....this needs to be my daily!)
4, Walk away.
I chose number 4!
Was that the right decision do you think? What would you have done?
I still have the option of buying it with a healthy reduction if I could find a reasonably economical way to repair the beast.

Welcome to the forum, converts are particularly welcome. Can I ask what do you mean by crap from the oil cap? Was it mayonaise or a bit of smoke? A simple compression test would reveal the true health of the engine. These engines are amongst the toughest ever made by Mercedes and are still fairly common if you needed to replace one? If you are still uncertain find a Merc specialst near to the e-bay seller and ask him for an opinion on the engines health?
Hi I looked at this one closely when Ken had it up for sale last year--very pretty if you like a non standard interior / paint job... beginning to blister on the rear quarter panels wrong exhaust for the turbo which may be part of the reason for the blow by... the turbo needs to breathe out as much as it generatesit had been "fiddled with" so no provenance and I saw it at about ........ GBP
3500....showing 1 offer and sold at the asking price in the previous listings section .still listed with DVlA as 3000cc diesel no mention of" turbo" which of course comes in under (modified ) and subject to a higher premium
hi there
just in case i will have a good 300gd (617) engine soon

Small world....
Yeah, the fact that it was modified concerned me until I contacted my insurance company and even declaring the turbo I would have seen a refund on my current Discovery policy.
There was no mayo.....oil and coolant very clean but at tick over there was a significant amount of smoke blowing out of the filler cap. I know they're strong engines but I suspect by the amount of blow by that the bores/rings are worn on this one.
