Hi all,

My g-wagen battery has a history of suddenly dying. It was starting and running fine on the Monday, then when we tried to start it the next day the battery was completely dead. I remember the previous owner years ago had the same problem occassionally.

I assumed that when you run the vehicle the battery should automatically charge? Has anybody else experienced this problem or can recommend a solution?

Hi. Your battery might be dead - when they are too old, they can't hold the charge any more and will discharge very quickly overnight. Otherwise, either you've got a short somewhere (there have been a few threads on how to go about finding these via the fusebox with a multimeter) or your alternator has given up the ghost. Try looking at the battery first and go from there.

in normal usage a battery is recharged after 20 minutes or so. However if your car is left standing and does nothing but short journeys it never gets fully recharged and will inevitably have a short life.

 How old is the battery?

I had the same problem a few months back, so I had it checked and one of the plates inside had just got to old and would not charge correctly - so it was a case of a new one . Did this happen before or after the re modeling work?

If you are really interested as to why your battery has given up the ghost I recommend you visit the Practical Boat owners (PBO) forum
. There are hundreds of blogss in this issue. Failing to  hold the charge may be attributed to  excessive sulphate deposits on the plates. amongst the other reasons.  This is caused by repeated  under charging or allowing the battery to run down below 12.1 volts. As a  start check with a voltmeter that your alternator is actually producing about 13.7 volts when the enfine is about 1500 rpm. If this is the  case, then start looking for electrical leaks  and earth losses in the system, by removing fuses one by one and testing.
