Basic tool kit
Hi
I am about to enter the wonderful world of diy servicing, having managed to avoid it up to now, but needs must.
My vehicle is a 1985 W460.
I am a reasonably competent domestic diy-er, but the last vehicle I worked on to any great extent was a mini.
So, having said all that, can anyone recommend what should go into a basic starter tool kit to enable me to do my own servicing, and possibly more advanced tasks?
Armed with this information, I can go to Halfords and not return with half the shop and an empty wallet!
thanks in advance...
Martin
You've been a member for nearly eight years and you ask now, what you been doing for servicing in the meantime
A good 3/8 drive metric socket set. (nothing wrong with Teng or halfords).
A 1/2 drive ratchet with 17, 19, and 22mmsockets.
One of those cheap extending 1/2 breaker bars. (with a 19mm socket will shift those stubborn wheel bolts)
16mm alen socket for greasing hubs.
Grease gun
A 19mm impact socket which is slimmer that standard sockets for working on the calipers.
A set of combination spanners.inc a 16mm which is often missing from sets. Elora if funds allow
An extra 14 mm spanner for prop shafts
Some good CK unbreakable screwdrivers ( you can hit these with a hammer)
A hammer to hit said screwdrivers.
A multi meter.
Alen keys.
strong pliers
Snipe nosed pliers
Long forcepts - great in tight spaces
Penetrating oil and patience for anything rusted up
Some copper grease for reassembly
You can buy the MB hubb socket or make your own with a grinder and an old socket
If you have a diesel then there are a couple of speial MB cranked spanners for doing the valves. ( I think they are sold in pairs - check before you order
A splitter for the track rod ends
i'm sure there is something else........
All available from your local flea market at a fraction of the shop price.
This list when finished would be a good FAQ/sticky somewhere;)
very useful info chris , cheers !
[does bulb come under tool by anychance] i am asking on behalf of pp...
Who you calling a tool:O
it wasnt me ds , it was pp !
That is a really useful list! Thanks a lot.
You are welcome.
It would be good to hear if anybody has needed anything else.
I also have an old tyre lever which is usefull for easing things and for putting a little pressure on things like exhaust joints when assebling.
Assorted bits of pipe to fit on alen keys and ratchets for extra power.
If you want to replace your own brake pipes you'll need a flaring tool, roll of pipe and some nipples.
Hello Martin,
Funny you should be in the market of tools, I have been looking for sometime to photo all my professional tools for sale and a roll cab with a top chest and side cabinet. This is a heavy duty unit with roller on the draw slides.
Should you be interested, PM with your location, I even have the grease gun with some grease in it, torque wrenches to air guns and electric ones and multimeter, vacuum pumps; useful for bleed brakes, syphoning fuel and liquids or engine oil etc,etc.... If you are interested I could do you a quick list which I wanted to do to post on the forum anyway.
Cheers,
Correction
It's a 17mm alen key for the hub grease.

I paid someone else to do it!
But now I have a nice dry spacious garage so am keen to get stuck in.
