After a few years away from a G we are back in the market for one again. Ticks all the boxes in terms of size, spec, etc so now its just a case of finding the right one. But strangely I have a dilemma and may seem strange to some. Ultimately I would like a G55 AMG but to make this practical I would have to fit an LPG. It’s the only way for it not to bankrupt me! Second option is to get a G350 diesel to ease with the running costs. I had a 2003 G270 CDi in the past and the car was lovely, but I am a real petrolhead at heart so I don’t think a diesel will keep me happy in the long term. Especially considering right now im driving a 911, and previously had a Cayenne Turbo (don’t shoot please). Has anyone else faced a similar dilemma?

I not driven the G350D but I have driven the G400CDI which is a V8 twin turbo diesel. I have used superlatives such as "Dogs B****K*" in some of my grammer but after the G400 experience I have upgraded to "Bulls *******". As a petrol head you would have no complaints. So withoout trying out some of these new diesels, don't rule it out.

Modificata, Nice to see you back and that you want a G..... Well my 500 is up for sale and it has a GWOA discount from the list price. Has everything: Congestion Charge exempt, V8, Hydrogen pack - (more MPG) , 9 seats, lit door sills, DVD (for you growing kids and a must for long journeys. My Dilemma is getting back into a G..... I have had the G350 it's brilliant, currently have the G63 and it's addictive but I do miss the MPG of the G350 and would buy another in a heartbeat.

Never had the G55 but drove the G500 and G400 some years ago, both equally good.

The G55 is neither here nor there, what you really want is a 350 and a 997 GTS.

even better, G500 and GTS for the price of a G55, two design classics for the price of one.

Re: Back in the market for a G

Hi Modificata,

I had the G300 TD and the G500 simultaneously and had to make up my mind which one to keep. Very very difficult decision, but eventually chose the V8 mainly because we tow a lot (offroad) and therefore the extra oomph of the petrol V8 versus the straight 6 TD was conclusive in deciding to keep it. Also, it sounds so good with the windows down. On the motorway, by the way, the mileage on cruise control at 100kph (i.e. max tow speed on the continent) is about the same, or maybe even a little less with the V8. Both are great cars.....and neither compare to your Cayenne for sheet bottle........I'm afraid you'll have to keep the 911 if you want speed thrills. If I remember correctly you find yourself in a hot climate: the V8 keeps cooler in the mountains than the TD. Although I never had overheating issues in my G300, the needle did rise on the temp guage, where as it never moves on the G500. Also, for some reason, the air con is better in the V8: I don't know why this should be but it is.

Good luck,

Phileas
