Automatic Gearbox leaking (small leak) help please
Hi,
I've had a problem with my gearbox for along time and has never changed 100% right etc etc. It gets stuck between gears sometimes when changing and as soon as I release my foot from alecerator and reapply it changes fine. I found out that the fluid needed topping up but has a leak. Now i'm not great at knowing what parts are under the Merc so will try my best to explain.
It is leaking about center of the Merc...A mechanic checked the automatic fluid in the engine bay but said it was topped up fine. He then climbed under the car and topped up something there and said it was low with a leak and needs a new gasket (but he said he wouldn't know where to source one AKA can't be bothered lol)
Can anyone help please as when he topped this up the gears changed perfect and worked great. Where would I get one from in the UK please?
Mercedes 280ge SWB Automatic W460
MAny thanks
Joe
Hello Joe,
From what I understand of your thread, your gear changing has been resolved since the gear oil was topped up, this means it is the gear leakage you want to address. You have also mentioned the oil leak seems to be in the centre of the gearbox, this suggests probably, either, the front gearbox seal (gearbox removal job) or the rear gearbox oil seal (prop.shaft removal job). You can try and source after market ones, but for what it costs, you may as well order from the dealer.
You could have the gearbox pan seal leaking (available from motor factors); depending on the area of leak, this can displace oil from the centre of the gearbox. If you are still having gear change problems, particularly, upshifts; the gear box modulator valve is the cause, you could have leaking vacuum pipes or connection to the valve or the valve its self, could be internally leaking, with proper equipment, these can be tested out.
Other sources of leaks can be the speedo bung seal (leaks from rear left [n/s] of gearbox), kick down switch seal (leaks from right-front of gearbox [o/s]) or the speedo gear gasket (leaks at rear of gear box).
Given all these sources of leaks, it is important to identify the area of leak initially.
Cheers,
Hi Joe,
I would have provided a part number for you, but my License for the EPC has just expired, I will not being buying another because I am weighing up whether to remain with the club or not.
To answer your question, get them from the dealer; if you are going to renew the seal and if the gearbox oil and the filter has not been renewed in the last 36,000 miles, now is the time to buy a filter and renew that at the same time.
A good motor factor in your locality can supply.
Cheers,
Hi!!!
Thanks alot for the reply :)
The Gearbox pan sounds like the one as the mechanie said it was a pan seal or something. You are right when I top up the oil (UNDER the Merc) it changes great.
Wheres the best place to source that part? and what part would i need?
