Re: are g-wagen prices going through the roof

Hi Paul
Asking and Getting are to different things.... the economic downturn and cost of fuel appears to have prompted a lot of  G'owners to sell ---asking prices they have them valued at on their insurance certificates---not reflecting the condition/provenance of the vehicle---bottom end 460 market about the same....  diesels and max seating attracting better price --- petrols more abundant so cheaper deals to be done.....later 463 models not much movement...watch the "completed listings" on E'bay for actual "sold at" prices............

Yes I think they deffinatley are on the up!
Could be as it's come back in to the U.K. market or  interest in owning one, possibly seeing a little more on the road.

460 prices are creeping up for sure, 463's are holding prices too, I suppose the more options a G-wagon has or decent colour combination will sell.

I don't think they are going through the roof yet though...

I don't think this is dear do you?? On Autotrader cheap!

Nice G320 engine, plenty of power.

Have driven the car and can say that it drives lovely, it's a GWOA members.
Also the leather interior is spot on (has seat covers at the moment), Original good paint aswell.

Re: are g-wagen prices going through the roof

If you compare it to another 17 year old car with similar milage it's VERY expensive, so the market is very narrow, limited to people who know and want G's. Others will just by a 5 year old Disco (more fool them......perhaps).

I think sellers are looking at what G's are being advertised at and thinking they'd rather have the cash than the G.

Like this one for expample:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200587659840&fromMa...

Do not be fooled!

The reality is still that they're only worth what someone will pay, there aren't enough about to be able to do a true market appraisal of value. The 3 or 4 SWB 460's for sale atm for over £7k just won't sell. The red 230auto on ebay at £4995 doesn't appear to have had any offers on it. The red 230 at G-wagen has been for sale for at least 2 years at £3450 and it's not terrible. The last 460 sold on ebay was the gold 230 auto I think and that went for £3150 - a fair price imo. Haven't seen a 463 go for a while.

Top whack pries IMHO:
SWB 460 - £5k, LWB 460 - £8k, SWB 463* £12k, LWB 463* £17k.
*Excluding 500's/55's and some non RHD models. 463's will vary much more as there's still normal depreciaition to be done and some really special low milage ones about. With 460's it's all about condition and provenance.

"The reality is still that they're only worth what someone will pay" - spot on, Grecian.  See my classified ad post 4 down from here - the auction next week should provide an interesting barometer.

Although of course I'm hoping all you good people will be blinded by the "no reserve" tag, get completely carried away, and bid the bloody thing up through the roof... : )

Like you say Grecian- Perhaps, But G-wagens are hand Built 4x4's...

Maybe old but build quality and rarity is like no other 4x4 out there ...

Re: are g-wagen prices going through the roof

Interesting comments, as you know I am still trying to sell mine, and its really only traders that are calling up, usually wanting to offer around the 26-28K mark, only to re advertise it at 32-33K a few days later.

Its also interesting to find out that the G is also going to be made available in limited numbers to the MB dealer network, so while still a rarity in the UK, there will be a few more, soon to be around. They are also considering expanding the range to include the new 500, so they are saying down at Brooklands.

Re: are g-wagen prices going through the roof

I think the fact that the build quality is so much better than anything else out there sets them apart: they even beat the 80-series Landcruiser hands down for pure engineering intergrity and fit. I went for a little offroad bash last week in my now-13-year-old-463. Not a single squeak or rattle, solid as a rock, everything worked as it should, diff locks in/out no problem - really can't quibble at all......wouldn't want to have any other alternative (as I've owned the great majority of them personally and made my choice). There is only one thing I don't understand......

why, oh why, have they fitted the V6 turbo diesel (i.e. 350 CDI motor) and not the GL-and-S-Class V8 (i.e. 450 CDI motor) in the latest variant of the G ??????!!!!!!!???????..............if you want a really awesome motor for, lets face it, a heavy car, this has to be the best alternative.............I mean even LR caught on to (finally) putting a V8 TD into the Range Rover. MB what are you doing?....but this is another topic altogether...

Re: are g-wagen prices going through the roof

Sold my roadworthy 1990 230 GES for a realistic £1,300 at auction yesterday.  I'm happy with that for a 21 year old car with a few issues.  The price paid is also listed by Brightwells as 118% of the trade book price, so if you want a baseline value for that age/model it's about right.

Hope it has gone to a G enthusiast and not a dealer - but if you see it advertised for 5-10k next week, chuck a few tomatoes at 'em.

Re: are g-wagen prices going through the roof

This is briliant news - I bought my LWB diesel 460 for £5k six months ago.
Tidy throughout but slow as hell. Anybody here can have it for £8k :0)
Or if you've got a nice fast thirsty petrol one you want to swap with me give me a shout.
I put my petrol through the company ;0)

That Silver Pistonheads one was the one I rebuilt about three years ago. Fancy that!
