My apologies for not making the AGM. Whilst on route on the A34 just south of Oxford my 460 failed to proceed (just ******* stopped). Quite a frightning experience on such a fast road.

So it was an AA relay 75 miles home on the back of an 18 ton lorry.

Diagnosis - starter motor permanently running while key is in any position in the ignition - battery completly flat.

Starter motor and battery now disconected. Has anyone anyone any ideas?

Really was looking forward to coming. Hope everone has a great time.

Re: Apologies

Normally when the starter solenoid is powered with the ignition key, it will throw out the starter pinion, as this happens simultaneously, the starter motor is powered rotating the engine with the pinion gear engaged into the ring gear; turning the engine.

Now, if the starter were to be engaged whilst the engine was runing, the pinion gear would mesh with a runing ring gear and cause damage to the teeth of both, the ring gear and pinion. If no crashing sound was heard then it is possible the contacts could have bridged within the solenoid still turning the starter motor but without engaging the pinion.

In either case the starter and solenoid needs to be looked at. You can have a new, re-manufactured or re-conditioned one fitted.

I find a good auto electrician is useful to know who does starter repairs, the costs are at a third of new.

It would be advisable at this stage to have the battery tested and alternator charge rate tested out also.

Re: Apologies

Thats a shame John, was a good day and would have been good to met you.

Just for your info the Starters are available from MB Germany

£340 + vat exchange

Part number is A003 151 00 01 or A004 151 66 01

The first original part number is specific to the M102 engined G's 200GE and 230GE

The second suppercession is also G specific but also fits the M103 engined 300GE and OM602, OM603 engined 250GD 290GTD, 300GD AND 350GTD

The external solenoid looks to be available seperatly, part number A001 152 11 10 £68.50 + vat again from Germany

Hope you get sorted quickly and this will give you a comparison if you get it repaired

Gav

PS I think they are G specfic due to the water protectiona and Fording ability so bear this in mind if it is stripped for repair, you may lose this feature? The Gasket Kit is No Longer Available although they do list a few O ring seals...

Re: Apologies

Hi Panzer, I have a starter motor off a 300 GD, when I brought her there was a problem with starting sticking ( I thought ) the guy changed it before I paid, and low and behold the same problem was still there, I turns out it was the original battery in the last throws of life, but he gave me the old starter for a spare, if it is of any use you are more than welcom to it.

Re: Apologies

Thanks for the replies

Garage has changed the starter motor  and the problem persists - so do you think it is a poor battery. Battery has shown no problems but is old.

Spike 1 Thanks for the offer - but  I may have a spare as well!

Re: Apologies

Get them to test the alternator and check out the ignition barallel function and, or switch.
